Three women. Three smouldering secrets. Who will make it out alive?

It’s 5 November, and a woman awakens to a nightmare. Bound and gagged, she lies trapped in the heart of a towering bonfire. As the smoke thickens, panic sets in–she’s moments away from being engulfed in flames. How did it come to this?

Rewind eleven months: Margot, a faded TV star, and her long-suffering friend Anna watch as glamorous Liv and her flawless family move into their street. The three women soon fabricate the perfect pretence of friendship, but each harbours her own deadly secret–and newcomer Liv senses something is terribly wrong beneath the polished exteriors.

As cracks widen in the veneer of perfection and lies escalate out of control, tension ignites. Bonfire Night is approaching and someone is set to burn…But who will it be?

Ce que les critiques en disent

“A cast of narrators bring their talents to this psychological thriller about three neighbors—wealthy women with deep, dark secrets.… Knowelden as Margot takes listeners on a wild ride of privilege, while Quirk keeps Anna buttoned-up and neutral to infighting. Corbett, as Liv, is underhanded and manipulative. The other narrators take the smaller parts of previous victims. As the women piece together their individual stories, someone will be the next victim, but who?”AudioFile Magazine

“The most chilling opening I’ve ever read in any book—a superb start to a stellar thriller. This is trademark John Marrs and then some! Clever, twisty, dark, surprising, propulsive—an elevated thriller that readers will devour. I loved it.”Sunday Times bestselling author Andrea Mara

“Three deliciously devious women and a suburban setting alight with toxic secrets makes for an absolute scorcher of a read. Taut, smart, and breathlessly twisty—a surefire hit.”—Ellery Lloyd

John Marrs is at his best when writing dystopian fiction. While I do generally like his regular thrillers this one is not up to snuff. I found myself extremely bored while listening and generally not caring where the story went. Overall it was a let down. Hopefully his next is better.

This book is extremely hard to review without dropping spoilers like crazy. Suffice it to say that John Marrs crafts a unique, exceedingly clever Psychological Thriller with a paranormal twist. The story teases a revenge murder in the Prologue and then follows three potential victims ('Liv', 'Anna', and 'Margot').. with drip-drip-drip revelations introducing readers to jaw-dropping interconnections between the three & the "supernatural" scenario. The book becomes can't-look-away intriguing with the dizzying twists & turns.. but Marrs goes overboard with the psychopathology among these genuine b**ches. By the time we reached the climax, he had me hoping that all three would be killed. The book ended up pretty ludicrous but deliciously salacious.

As to presentation: the platoon reading technique (different voice actors reading different chapters from different POVs) was very effective - although the male readers sounded disinterested at times and a couple of female narrators displayed hysterical emotiveness or subpar false basso voices for male characters. In toto, the audiobook is a solidly "above-average" listen.

'You Killed Me First' merits 7.5 stars out of 10. I bought the book on sale and the $4.19CDN I paid for it was money well-spent. It's a bit of a "guilty pleasure" book - unlikely to edify - but worth a Credit if you have the right "just enjoy the ride" mindset.

I was a little nervous at the beginning, as I'm not a fan of supernatural aspects in a non-fantasy book.
But I was pleased there was no need to worry!
Thoroughly enjoyed!

another Marrs hit!
