AIF S01E03 - The Importance of Being Humble with Dimitri Abdul Nour

  • Summary

  • Hosted by Award winning filmmaker Julian Bate-Vergette and Screenwriting Coach Jason C. Marshall The Adventures in Filmmaking Podcast aims to share the stories of independent filmmakers. The challenges they face as well as their success and failures. Ultimately we aim to answer the biggest question of all; why are we compelled to tell our stories with motion pictures.

It all started at Tim Hortons. That's where Julian Bate - Vergette met actor Dimitri Abdul Nour for an impromptu audition for The Silencer.

Born in Lebanon, Dimitri moved to Canada in 2006 with his family.

In high school, CEGEP and University of Ottawa he was a dyed in the wool theatre kid. But it wasn't enough and he also began to act in local films which led to more films and even commercials.

However, it became apparent that his own unique creative voice wasn't being heard so he began to write and direct.

Screech was Dimitri's first, solo, attempt at making a short film. Incredibly stylized and rich in theme, Screech was well received by audiences and film festivals.

But something was missing. He did what he was supposed to, he made a film, sent it to festivals, it won a festivals...and nothing happened. Dimitri had learned first hand that winning awards doesn't equal fame, or a career in Hollywood or riches.

This gave him some pause and while attending a filmmaking seminar during the Digi 60 film festival he spoke with a producer who asked him a number of questions that gave him pause. It was a humbling experience, especially after winning awards and being told by his peers he was a great filmmaker.

In addition to being humbled, and leading him back to filmmaking basics, he learned that those around don't often provide constructive criticism. And without true, constructive, criticism it's impossible to grow in your craft.

Never one to be stopped by small obstacles, Dimitri simply added all this new information to what he already knew/had learned and continue to grow his knowledge base and his film catalogue. Though that pandemic did slow him down.

Dimitri is an extremely talented and resilient filmmaker and his appearance on the Adventures in Filmmaking Podcast shed a great deal of light on his knowledge and experience.

Notable subjects included film festivals and the culture surrounding them.

Rejection, as both and actor and a content creator.

That art is subjective and, despite the message you intended to send, the audience may get something completely different from it.

And the philosophy of being a filmmaker.

We hope you enjoy our conversation with Dimitri Abdul Nour.
