Every book is an artifact that contains an author’s story.

Based on a belief in the power of that story, Academic Book Club is a place to meet the authors of today’s most innovative, research-based writing as they discuss the content and the story behind their newest books.

Hosted by Alison Stratten, UnPodcast co-host and PhD student in Social Justice Education at the University of Toronto.

  • Curriculum of the Mind: Scholarship, Sound, and Storytelling
    Oct 23 2026

How do we create scholarship that’s beyond the page - and, what can we learn by bringing music and learning together?

On this episode of the ABC Podcast we welcome the author and producer of Curriculum of the Mind, Stevie, Dr. View Johnson. Assistant Professor of Creative Practice in Popular Music at The Ohio State University. Published by University of Michigan Press

Curriculum of the Mind is a groundbreaking hip-hop album that transforms the boundaries of scholarship, sound, and storytelling. Part collective memoir, part mixtape, and part political manifesto, the writing and music invites readers and listeners alike into a world where turntables become textbooks and samples act as archives of Black life.

The work features Black students, parents, creatives, and prospective college-goers who rarely see themselves reflected in academia. It challenges educators, librarians, and institutions to rethink what learning looks and sounds like in the 21st century.

  • Writing Writing During the Apocalypse: Reflections on the Great Unraveling
    Oct 9 2026

In this week’s episode, Dr. Ed Simon talks about his latest book Writing During the Apocalypse Reflections on the Great Unraveling (Bloomsbury).

Rising authoritarianism. Covid. Inflation. Wealth disparity. War. Climate change. While every time period is marked by apocalyptic fears, it certainly seems like our current anxieties aren't ill placed. And yet, art and literature persist. In his new book, Ed grapples with the notion that writers and their work ought to distract readers from our currently dire situation. Ed argues that to craft imaginative spaces through the magic of words isn't superfluous. Instead it exists at the core of human experience – as it always has and always will.

What is it like to write during what could be the last decades of human civilization?
