  • 7 - Don't Let Fear Hold You Back from Becoming a Speaker
    Jan 10 2023

Of all the things that keep adults from achieving their goals with getting paid to speak, is fear. It holds them back. It might be the fear that they won't succeed, that others will laugh at them, that they won't be accepted or that they might fail. Many of us heard the message over and over, "You're not good enough," and many are allowing that endless tape to play over and over, especially when we feel that others didn't like what we had to offer.

Doug Foresta is a therapist and podcasting coach and someone I've included in my inner circle for years. I've invited him in to speak to groups I've been a part of and we worked together for workforce development groups nationally. I had an opportunity to be featured as a guest on Doug's radio show and we discussed, not only what's inside my book, but the things like fear that hold people back from bringing their gifts to the world.

When you are presenting something that ignites the passion in you, everything changes. The topic is delivered effectively, the audience is receptive and you as a speaker feel so complete and aligned with yourself and your message. So figure out what your message is and start putting it together to change the lives of others. This recording is the property of Bill Corbett and the GET PAID TO SPEAK PODCAST, copyright 2023. • 6 - How to Become an On-Air Contributor to Network TV and Radio
    Dec 14 2022

I'm Bill Corbett, professional speaker, author and television program producer and host. After nearly 20 years of traveling nationally and internationally, delivering presentations, I sat down and wrote the Amazon bestseller, FROM THE SOAPBOX TO THE STAGE: HOW TO USE YOUR PASSION TO START A SPEAKING BUSINESS. And now you're listening to the GET PAID TO SPEAK PODCAST to help you use what you feel passionate about to inspire change in others.

There are so many incredible things you can begin doing immediately to help launch yourself as a speaker in your local area. One of those things is to become a local expert that television show producers can call on to appear on local news and magazine shows to help them fill air time with quality programming that people want to watch. Becoming an on air contributor is easy to do but takes time to develop yourself and some patience to make it work. In this episode I'm going to teach you how to do it and share some segments of my on air interviews with local ABC and NBC affiliate stations. So let's get started with, why you need to become a local on air contributor and how to do it.

Television producers need content and subject matter experts that can provide that content. All you have to do is find the producers and introduced yourself to them. Start by thinking of the people you can help, the people that will eventually be seated in your audience when you're speaking. Imagine them in your mind and imagine the problems they may be dealing with. Just think about who you can help because of what you know. Let's say you worked in HR and want to speak to HR professionals. What problems do they deal with. If you are a car dealer, I would imagine that you might have other car dealers in mind. What problems can you provide the answers for to help them sell more cars.

Once you have their contact information, send them your information as to who you are, what your expertise is and how they can contact you. Keep it brief, professional and concise. Then weekly, send them topic ideas they might interest them for a future segment. Keep an eye on national new or trends that you could offer advice on.

Once you get noticed by local producers and they like you as a guest, they will begin calling you regularly for on-air opportunities.  When you are presenting something that ignites the passion in you, everything changes. The topic is delivered effectively, the audience is receptive and you as a speaker feel so complete and aligned with your self and your message. So figure out what your message is and start putting it together to change the lives of others. I want to hear what your ideas and questions are. Email me at Bill@billcorbett.com and let's connect. I'd love to hear from you.

  • 5 - Know Your Material and Meet Speaker Rev. Talley
    Dec 7 2022

Successful speakers that get invited back by the meeting planners make it a point to know their material before they utter their first word on the stage. You have no idea what may occur at the event that could affect your presentation. The client might reduce or extend your time in front of the audience or equipment malfunctions could occur. Knowing your material well will help you "roll with the punches" or react to whatever happens.

In this episode you're going to learn from a great speaker and a friend of mine, Reverand Clyde Talley. Rev. Talley is an award-winning speaker, an ordained minister and a 20 year member of Toastmasters International. Because there is so much to learn from hearing the stories of how other speakers got their start, I've asked him to tell us how he got started speaking with passion, along with offering tips for new speakers. He is a big believer in encouraging speakers to know their material.

  • 4 - Get published and training for speakers and MORE!
    Dec 4 2022

I'm the author of the book FROM THE SOAPBOX TO THE STAGE, an Amazon best-seller that reached the number 2 spot in it's category . One of the many techniques for getting hired to speak to groups is to get published. To get started on this, create an image of who your ideal audience members would be and then list the problems that they deal with on a regular basis. Then write 500-word artcles (essays) that feature solutions to these problems. Once you get the first few written, get them published. In this podcast episode, I share an unconventional way of getting your articles published.

The interviewer for SPEAKER SERVICES asked me how I usually deal with rejection when submitting my articles and I offer up an interesting idea for doing just that. Also included in this podcast is the topic of training. The interviewer asks me if speakers need training and I quickly respond with YES THEY DO, and then provide two different types of training and how to achieve them.

There is much more in this episode, including how to get hired to speak at conferences and how to effectively collect email addresses of the people sitting your conference  audience. And speaking of conferences, check out my Amazon book for this very topic, HOW TO BECOME A CONFERENCE SPEAKER.

  • 3 - Surround yourself with successful speakers
    Nov 28 2022

One of the best techniques for developing yourself and your skills is to surround yourself with great and encouraging people. Better yet, hang out with people who are already doing the kinds of things that you want to master. So that's exactly what I did as I was growing my own speaking business. And in the process I started a television show on public access television in which I interviewed top speakers who were already speaking for a living and were willing to share their secrets.

In this episode, I'll share with you my interview with professional speaker and trainer, Jim Bouchard, who is known as the black belt guy. I got Jim to share his inspiring transformation from dropout and drug addict to Black Belt and Sensei -- and how that experience made him a genuine leader.  He went on to open 5 martial arts schools, helping hundreds of people achieve their Black Belt rank, and thousands more discover their best selves.

Today, Jim helps leaders around the world connect on a deeply human level to attract, engage, and lead people to their highest levels of performance and productivity. He actually took his passion and turned it into a 6-figure income. You can learn more about him at that black belt guy. You'll meet Jim in this episode and then in a future episode, I'm going to ask him to share some tips that will help YOU develop your skills. So without further delay, here's my interview with Jim Bouchard, that black belt guy.

Thanks again for listening to this episode of THE GET PAID TO SPEAK PODCAST with me, Bill Corbett. I've got more great episodes coming up, especially another conversation with Jim Bouchard where I'll ask him to share some tips on becoming a successful speaker. You're not going to want to miss it. Don't forget to check out Jim's website, that black belt guy. And if you liked this interview, you can download THE EXPERT'S GUIDE TO PROFESSIONAL SPEAKING on Amazon.com, available on kindle or audible. • 2 - Ask others how they got their start
    Nov 26 2022

I'm lucky enough to have a large circle of speaking partners who have allowed me to interview them for both television and radio. Some of these professionals I can actually call them a friend, to provide them with help if they need it, or to call on them when I'm the one in need.

So in this episode, my friend Dan Blanchard stopped by and we pulled out the microphones to record a casual conversation about how we each began our journey to help others through professional speaking, and getting paid to do it in the process.

Dan is a best selling author, speaker and educator. He's written numerous books, including his latest one, The Storm: How Young Men Become Good Men. He has also just released his first memoire titled, A Fighting Chance. And he's inspired me to write my own by the end of next year. Here's my conversation with Dan Blanchard.

I can tell you that Dan has no fear of speaking and I got over mine a long time ago. But the fear of speaking definitely keeps some adults from considering adding speaking to their marketing plan. Yes, unfortunate situations do happen, and to even the most seasoned of speakers.

In addition to my book, FROM THE SOAPBOX TO THE STAGE, I've written other publications to help speakers grow their business. Want to hear about some of the worst things that have happened to speakers? Check out my book on Amazon, SPEAKERS' WORST NIGHTMARES. It's available now on Amazon Kindle and if you are a member of Kindle Unlimited, you can download it now for free.

  • 1 - What could YOU publish a book on to help others?
    Nov 26 2022

This first episode was intended to set the stage. It gave me a chance to give you a little background on how I got started as a speaker, and tips that you might find useful. But it's just the beginning. It was an interview I did, just after my book first came out, and it was conducted by Susan Levin's SPEAKER SERVICES. The actual interview lasted almost an hour and you'll hear more segments of it over the next few episodes. If you're interested in reading or listening to my book, you'll find it on Amazon and Audible under the title, FROM THE SOAPBOX TO THE STAGE. If you do, please consider leaving a comment there, good or bad, I'll gladly take it all. And if you felt the information was helpful, you're welcome to buy me a cup of coffee at BUY ME A COFFEE.COM /BILLC.
