• What Is Lent?
    Feb 28 2024

What Is Lent? To be honest Lent, or in particular the Lenten Season was a much bigger deal to me when I was younger, than it is now. I'm surprised at the amount of people that have no idea what Lent is and the practices that many have during the season.

Maybe you don't know what Lent is, or anything about the season. To help clarify, the Christian season of Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. The start of Lent is always the same, the ending however depends on who you ask. Since 1969, Catholics have stopped observing Lent on “Maundy Thursday” or “Holy Thursday,” which means Lent will end on the Thursday before Easter. Traditionally, however, Lent has ended during “Holy Week,” on “Holy Saturday," which is the Saturday before Easter. What Is Lent?

Mardi Gras is the day before Ash Wednesday, when the Christian season of Lent begins. This day is also called Shrove Tuesday, a name that comes from the practice of “shriving”—purifying oneself through confession—before Lent.

What Is Lent? Lent, a significant time in the Christian calendar, serves as a period of reflection and repentance lasting 40 days, dedicated to prayer, worship, and sacrifice. The exact interpretation of Lenten traditions varies among different Christian denominations.

Rooted in the biblical narrative of Jesus fasting in the desert for 40 days, facing temptation by Satan before beginning his ministry, Lent holds a solemn place in the liturgical year of various Christian traditions including Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Orthodox, and others. The specific days considered part of Lent differ between denominations, but the duration remains consistent at 40 days. What Is Lent?

  • Valentine's Day, History, Hype, or a little of both.
    Jan 31 2024

Valentine's Day, History, Hype, or a little of both. Maybe you have heard this, Valentine's Day is a made up celebration. The primary purpose is to get people to buy things like chocolates, jewelry, flowers and greeting cards.

A lot can be said about the commercialization of Valentine's Day but many people don't know the history of reason behind the day.

Valentine's Day is a celebration observed on February 14th each year. It is a day dedicated to expressing love and affection between intimate companions. The day is named after Saint Valentine, a Christian martyr who lived during the Roman Empire. Valentine's Day, History, Hype, or a little of both.

Traditionally, people celebrate Valentine's Day by exchanging cards, flowers, and gifts with their significant others. The color red is often associated with the day, symbolizing love and passion. Many couples also go out for romantic dinners or engage in special activities to celebrate their relationship.

Valentine's Day, History, Hype, or a little of both. Our original question, is Valentine's Day a made up holiday designed to get everyone to spend money. Or is it a real celebration, or a combination of both. While that is debated I will tell you from experience, if you have someone special in your life shell out a few bucks and buy them something to show them that they are special to you. It is an investment that will pay off in much more bliss.

  • What is SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder?
    Jan 17 2024

What is SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder? Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.), also known as Seasonal Depression, is a specific type of depressive disorder that occurs predominantly during certain seasons of the year, typically in fall or winter. The prevailing belief is that the reduced duration of daylight and shorter days may instigate a chemical alteration in the brain, leading to symptoms of depression. Treatment options for S.A.D. often involve light therapy and antidepressant medications.

Who is susceptible to S.A.D.? What is SAD, or Seasonal Affective Disorder?

S.A.D. typically emerges in adulthood, and the likelihood of its occurrence tends to rise with age. It is comparatively rare among individuals under the age of 20, and statistics indicate a higher prevalence among women than men.

    What contributes to S.A.D.?

The primary factors linked to S.A.D. involve diminished sunlight and the brevity of daylight hours, which are believed to trigger a chemical shift in the brain and contribute to the development of this disorder. Additionally, melatonin, a hormone associated with sleep regulation, has been associated with S.A.D. The body's natural production of melatonin increases in darkness, and during shorter and darker days, there is a heightened production of this hormone.

Christmas Season When Does It Start? The Christmas season, also recognized as the festive season, holiday season, or holidays, is an annual period observed in numerous Western and other countries. Typically spanning from late November to early January, it includes celebrations like Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and various other holidays and festivals. This time witnesses a peak in retail activities during the Christmas shopping season, followed by sales in January.

In Western Christianity, the Christmas season aligns with Christmastide, extending from December 25 to January 5, known as the 12 Days of Christmas. Over time, the economic impact and anticipation of Christmas Day led to the inclusion of the liturgical Advent season, observed from the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day until Christmas Eve.

    Nov 11 2023

Turkey and Thanksgiving, Why The Connection? Turkey and Thanksgiving are deeply intertwined elements of a traditional American holiday celebration.
