  • E38 An Interview with Ontario Bar Exam Coach Founder, Piper Riley Thompson
    Dec 9 2022

In this week’s episode, I sit down with Piper Riley Thompson!

[Side note: I was on her and Erin O’Rourke’s podcast “Off the Tracks” just over a year ago, and was thrilled when she agreed to swap seats for my podcast! Their podcast was one of the first podcasts I was a guest on and it helped me pull the trigger on starting my own podcast.]

We discussed her journey to law school, passing the Ontario bar exam, starting her own business, moving to Manitoba and Alberta, and lastly…retiring her license! This episode is one of my longer ones but it really is worth every second!

It was a pleasure to catch up with Piper and I hope you all enjoy this episode as much as we did!

  • E37 The new CICC-accredited program at Université de Montréal with Emeline Nozieres
    Dec 2 2022

In this weeks episode I speak with Emeline Nozieres. Emeline is located in Quebec, Canada and just graduated from the D.E.S.S. en réglementation canadienne et québécoise de l'immigration (DESS in Canadian and Quebec immigration regulations) from the Université de Montréal.

To become an Immigration Consultant, an individual must now complete a CICC-accredited program offered at either Université de Montréal (delivered in French) or Queens University (delivered in English).

You must also complete an exam to officially become a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) and Emeline also just passed this exam!

We discussed her background, details of the program, and the differences between when we wrote the exam. Spoiler: When I wrote the exam in February 2021 it was an open-book exam, whereas now it is a closed-book exam!

If you have any questions about the contents of this episode, please feel free to reach out!

  • E34(mini) Can I get a refund if my Canadian immigration application is refused?
    Nov 4 2022

When it comes to government fees, most application fees are for processing your application only. Once the processing starts, you will not be eligible for a refund of your payment, even if your application is refused.

There are exceptions to this rule though. Here is a list of fees that are refundable if your application is refused:

    - Consular Fee (varies)

    - Employer Compliance Fee (CAD $230)

    - Open Work Permit (LMIA exempt) Fee (CAD $100)

    - International Experience Class Fee (CAD $156)

    - Right of Permanent Residence Fee (CAD $515)

    - Right of Citizenship Fee (CAD $100)

*Note: A Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant cannot refund their professional service fees if your application is rejected. This is called "Contingency Fees" and is strictly prohibited by the CICC.

  • E33(mini) Who can help me with my Canadian immigration matter?
    Oct 28 2022

In this mini-solo episode, I discuss the three legal professionals that can help you with your Canadian immigration matter: Canadian Immigration Lawyers, Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCIC) and Ontario Licensed Paralegals. Note: Paralegals and Consultants have a narrow scope of practice and cannot provide the same services as a lawyer.

Verify a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) and/or Ontario Licensed Paralegal by going to their governing bodies websites:

    CICC for RCIC: https://college-ic.ca/protecting-the-public/find-an-immigration-consultant?l=en-CA

    LSO for Paralegals: https://lso.ca/public-resources/finding-a-lawyer-or-paralegal/lawyer-and-paralegal-directory
