The Real Japanese

Written by: Pernille Rudlin
  • Summary

  • The untold stories of the Japanese women, men and children who came to Britain in the 19th century as members of performing troupes and decided to settle there. I'll look at their marriages, divorces, careers, children and brushes with the law. Some episodes will also consider broader themes around immigration and integration - and what their impact was on the arts in Britain, and what we mean by authenticity and originality.

You can see some more images of them on https://ninjin.co.uk/japanese-troupe-images/ and a playlist of YouTube videos showing Japanese acrobats and performers here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLApI9CQrsKwfQO32rUpK9l7ajp-1_Ubnr

  • Otake - the real Yum Yum?
    Mar 30 2021

Otake was born around 1850 in Nagasaki and left Japan with her husband Tannaker Buhicrosan's troupe of acrobats at the age of 16. She performed as a dancer in Britain in the 1870s and 1880s and may well have been the inspiration for Yum Yum in Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado.

This podcast talks about her life, achievements, children and views, as well as the ups and downs, prejudices and scandals she had to deal with as a Japanese woman living in Britain, coping with a bigamist, army deserter, bankrupt, drug addict, impresario husband.
