The Real Life in Italy

  • Summary

  • The Real Life in Italy is just doing the best we can to make life in Italy as a foreigner just a bit easier. We’re cutting through the bullshit of “La Dolce Vita” to share with you what you really need to know while living in Italy. From tidbits of Italian culture to navigating the nightmarish bureaucracy, and even some language tips, you’ll find it all here. What will we be talking about? Anything and everything about living in Italy. Here’s just some questions we’ll look to answer: Who the hell was this Garibaldi guy? And this Aldo Moro? Why does every town have a Via XX Settembre?! How do I get my Permesso di Soggiorno and more importantly, dear God how do I survive the Questura? What DOES mi raccomando mean? What Birth Control is in Italy? Can I get IVF on Healthcare? What are my options when pregnant in Italy? (Yes, we’ll get serious.) What IS the difference between Carabinieri and Polizia?! No really, can I get an iced coffee in Italy? Living in Italy as a foreigner is filled with challenges and moments where we all want to cry, rip out our hair, throw the towel in, and say basta, I’m going home. You’re not alone. But I believe the more we can confidently understand our life abroad as expats in Italy, the easier, and more enjoyable it gets. My own life in Italy has taken me to struggle through, and figure out how bureaucracy, healthcare, and finances work here. Along the way, because I am a nerd, I’ve also decided to learn all I can about the long and complicated history of this country I call home. Nothing makes me happier than sharing this information with fellow expats in Italy and watching them laugh off the struggle and thrive in their new life in Italy. This podcast is for foreigners living in Italy, who are all just trying to make sense of it all. Listen in to learn all about a side of living in Italy everyone else forgot to tell you about. But don’t expect us all to be better, I promise. Expect some good laughs, helpful tips and cultural explanations, and expat stories to remind you that you aren’t alone, and it’ll all work out. • Navigating Freelance Life in Italy: Insights from Evelyn & Claudia (Part 2)
    Jun 3 2024

This week on The Real Life in Italy we are back again talking about freelancing in Italy, featuring a discussion with your host Evelyn, and Claudia. We’re sharing our journeys with the partita IVA in Italy, covering key topics like managing taxes, finding clients, and the choice between online platforms and traditional accounting. While our experiences may look different from yours, we hope we can provide other expats in Italy an overview of the challenges and opportunities faced by freelancers in Italy, including practical advice for navigating the Partita IVA, leveraging digital marketing skills, and making informed decisions to succeed in the freelance market.

This episode covers a more casual look at how the Partita IVA has touched our lives as foreigners in Italy, but if you’d like a little more technical idea of how it works, check out last weeks episode “ The Italian Partita IVA: What to know for being self-employed in Italy ”

The incredible online (and in English!) accounting software that Claudia mentions is here: https://www.xolo.io/it-en?ref=collinemontagne

And it looks like a lifesaver.

  • The Italian Partita IVA: What to know for being self-employed in Italy (Part 1)
    May 27 2024

Ready for another, more practical, episode of The Real Life in Italy? We’re talking about the Partita IVA, what it is, when you need it, and how it all works.

If you as a foreigner living in Italy, ever had hopes of opening a small business or going freelance in Italy, then you’ll need to get real familiar with this code. The Partita IVA is your tax code that lets you do business in Italy.

We’ll explore the different options of the partita IVA in Italy, what taxes in Italy look like with this code, and a few pros and cons.

Ultimately if you are an expat in Italy looking to open a Partita IVA, or understand it better, the best thing you can do it find a commercialista - an Italian accountant.

As promised in the episode, here’s a resource list for you. If you are looking for an online Italian accounting service in English: https://www.xolo.io/it-en?ref=collinemontagne

I’ll be back soon with a fellow freelancer in Italy to tell you more about what it’s like working and living in Italy as a freelancer. In the meantime, enjoy.
