Au XVIIIe siècle vécut en France un homme qui compta parmi les personnages les plus généreux et les plus horribles de son époque. Il s'appelait Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. In the slums of 18th-century France, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift - an absolute sense of smell. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects. Then one day, he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume" - the scent of a beautiful young virgin.

Esta obra trata - entre otras muchas cosas - de la existencia de un hombre en su pequeña habitación. La estancia insonorizada en cuyo ámbito transcurre íntegramente la acción es un microcosmos en el que aparece encapsulado un destino humano singular, que es a la vez el de un instrumento y el de su intérprete.
