Sigmund Freud founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology and was particularly well known for his focus on the unconscious mind. En outre, ne se limitant pas à cette seule question, Freud développe également dans cet ouvrage sa théorie sur les pulsions de vie et de mort, cherchant à expliquer des aspects du psychisme humain qui ne sont pas entièrement compris par la seule référence au principe de plaisir.
