Story
The summer of 2002 featured the worst drought in Arizona in nearly a century. It triggered a fire that burned over a half-million acres of National Forest land. It dried up watering holes and forced ranchers to cut their stock by up to a third. Wells ran dry and municipalities had to open water stations, much like gas stations. During that summer, producer Lex Gillespie toured Arizona and spoke with firefighters, park service personnel, farm families and community leaders about the impact of the drought.

Story
In the high tech world of NASA and the military, the concept of remote medical consultations from the isolation of an orbiting spacecraft or a ship on international patrol has been accepted and well-known for some time. But telemedicine also plays an increasingly important role in the lives of ordinary people.

Story
Anyone sending a space shuttle into orbit, building a skyscraper, or even studying bone density owes a debt of gratitude to Isaac Newton and his theory of gravitation and laws of motion. Yet, the role of gravity in life’s processes, from cell structure to the human cardiovascular system remains unclear.

Story
Technologies that help the deaf to hear such as the cochlear implant are able to work wonders for profoundly deaf individuals. Very young children who are born deaf are increasingly being given cochlear implants, but these children present a special challenge for doctors and scientists. They don't have the language development skills that people who have lost their hearing later in life possess, and as a result their ability to acquire language with a cochlear implant has not always been successful.

Story
During its 70-year tenure, a hot dog stand in Oakland, California became an anchor for residents of the city's Temescal neighborhood in good times and bad. As one of Soundprint’s listeners said: “Guys, it’s about the hot dog. The old guy who owned and ran the place, by himself, Kasper, made them one at a time. He rejected the whole notion of "'fast food.'" This is the story of Kasper's Original Hot Dogs.

Story
Talk about taxis as a guilty pleasure! Producer Judith Kampfner gives us a metropolitan comparison: whether it's riding in style on the streets of New York (avoiding the hustle, bustle, and pain of the subway), or zipping across London's spiraling maze of cross-streets (never doubting your intrepid guide's sense of direction). Join us for a tour of taxi drivers -- the rough-edged New York City cabbies, and the traditional, vintage hacks of London. It’s never predictable – who might be the next stranger to inhabit your space?

Story
Two 17-year-old students were gunned down by a fellow 15-year-old student in the hallways of Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, New York. Although unusual at school, it was not an uncommon occurrence in East New York City, an area where families shared their community with drug dealers. The year was 1991. Producer Maria Hinojosa talks to kids who had no protection against the violence that surrounded them, other than toting guns.

Story
In the early years of the AIDS epidemic, the CDC identified four risk factors for HIV infection: “homosexuals, hemophiliacs, heroin addicts and Haitians.” Although public health messages have changed to a recognition that behavior, not ethnicity, can lead to infection, stigma stills permeates the Haitian community. Producer Lakshmi Singh visits the immigrant community in the U.S. where the disease remains in the shadows and then travels on to Haiti.
