In the 21st century we may believe air travel is dangerous. In the era in which Mark Twain lived the same was felt for train travel. However, this short story allows the author to explain why he believed that lying in bed was much more dangerous and why he would by accident insurance whenever he was home, but felt entirely safe on the road. The train agent in the story may have wished he had never asked the author a question.

When we first met "the pariah of the village... the son of the drunkard" in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Tom was "under strict orders not to play with him," so he played with him every time he got the chance. Twain took his most outrageous and outcast character (and perhaps the one he loved the most), Huckleberry Finn, from that timeless tale and wrote his own adventures.

The duke and the dauphin attempt several unsuccessful scams. Huck escapes to the raft and finds Jim missing. Huck discovers that the dauphin sold Jim to a farmer named Silas Phelps for $40. Huck, despite his own moral objections, resolves to steal Jim back. Huck runs into the duke posting fliers for his show. Duke tells Huck that Jim's 40 miles away.
