Story
For Spencer, Ellie has always been his rock. His stability. The one who was there for him in his darkest hour. But he's never thought of her as more than a friend...until now. And that's just inconvenient, since he knows what she wants, right down to how she takes her coffee. It isn't him. Ellie wants a stable life and a white picket fence, so she only dates guys who want that, too. She knows Spencer doesn't do relationships. And besides, high school is over, and he's about to be a US Marine.

Story
I’m independent, outgoing, smart, and don’t like constraints on my life. Curtis took all that from me. Somehow, he stole it away a little at a time, and I barely noticed. Until it was too late. Then, it was all-out war between us. Seth stepped in and saved me; not once, but twice. The super-sexy, hard-bodied bar owner makes my heart melt with his protectiveness. It’s not easy to woo me, but Seth has done a remarkable job. His tender caresses mixed with the lust for me in his eyes steals my breath.

Story
Hard work and no play makes for a cranky cowboy. Needing a night out on the town left me sneaking in my father’s house like a teenage boy. That was my first mistake of the day. The second was playing hero to a damsel in distress that turned out to be no damsel at all but a sexy, snarky woman who took me by surprise. How you ask? I’d been a ladies man. That is until I became a father. I didn’t need the complicated messy kind of love stuff. My hands were full. The day I met the woman who would steal my heart.

Roman’s not like the other King souls in Primitus, he knows that. He thinks about things other than survival, like why the sun no longer sets or rises. He questions the strict laws and beliefs they are forced to live under. And he doesn’t buy the official narrative about what happened to the world, why there’s nothing left but suffering and death - that it’s all Eve’s fault.

Story
Originally published in the San Francisco Examiner in 1891 as "Tales of Soldiers and Civilians" and retitled in Britain as "In the Midst of Life", this audiobook is a collection of 11 short stories from the tales of civilians. Ambrose Bierce loved to focus on the troubled, and perhaps marginally insane, citizens of his time, and the power of the mind, and love gone wrong. For example, "The Man and the Snake" is a story where the snake never attacks, but the man dies.

Story
What does one do when issued an order by a superior that is contradictory to what one believes to be right? In this short fictional story from the American Civil War, the protagonist is faced with that very situation. When given an insulting and ridiculous order by his commanding general, he carries the order out. Then, when questioned by a subordinate, he passes it on to him in the same manner. Friendly fire in a fog is just as deadly as fire from the enemy.

Story
First published in 1913, "Fishhead" by Irwin S. Cobb takes place at real Reelfoot Lake, the largest lake south of the Ohio line mostly in Tennessee but extending up across what is now the Kentucky line. The protagonist, Fishhead, a halfbreed lives alone by his choice and by the choice of his neighbors because of his deformity that causes his head to resemble a fish. This story was written in 1913, and the narrators chosen to leave the N-word in as part of the narration, so please be aware. This is another nery creepy story, that no doubt influenced H.P. Lovecraft.

Volume 16 of the Tom Swift series, finds our hero inventing the world's largest, and of course best, cannon for Uncle Sam, able to destroy a target at a distance of over 30 miles. Not only does Tom Swift engineer this large cannon, but he also invents the propellant. Take-charge type of guy that he is, generals and villains are no match for him, not to mention his faithful giant Koku who nearly single-handedly ties down the 30-ton loose cannon on the deck of a pitching warship.
