When Pollyanna's father dies, she is sent to live with her only surviving relative, the rich but stern Aunt Polly. Pollyanna's joy soon turns to disappointment when her spinster aunt gives her a cold greeting and tells her she is to stay in the attic. It's not the welcome Pollyanna expected, but she soon regains her spirits, playing the "glad game" her father taught her.

Pollyanna, now cured of her crippling spinal injury, and able to walk again, goes to live in Boston with Mrs. Carew, a heart-broken woman searching for her lost nephew. Her Aunt Polly goes abroad with her new Uncle, Dr. Chilton. While in Boston, Pollyanna meets new friends and has several interesting adventures... A startling change in Aunt Polly's and Pollyanna's circumstances require Pollyanna to come up with a workable solution. Pollyanna's solution brings all her new friends from Boston and her old friends in Beldingsville together.

When Pollyanna Whittier's loving but impoverished father dies, she is left orphaned and alone. Her wealthy spinster aunt, Aunt Polly, agrees to take her in, so she and her few belongs are packed onto an eastbound train. Pollyanna looks forward to living with her aunt, but Aunt Polly is cold and strict. She puts Pollyanna in a musty attic room and expects her to keep quiet and stay out of the way.

Pollyanna is a kind novel advocating an optimistic outlook, which is summarized in a famous quote 'When you look for the bad in mankind expecting to find it, you surely will'. Pollyanna, a young orphan, is living with her stern aunt, who is taking care of her out of 'sense of duty'. Under any circumstances Pollyanna prefers to see only their best side, taking joy in simplest things, she affects everyone around her. Hence a popular term 'Pollyannaism', or the Pollyanna Principle, a subconscious bias towards the positive.

Since it first appeared in 1913, Pollyanna has become an enduring favorite with children. Eleanor Porter wrote this wonderful novel two years after the runaway success of her book "Pollyanna". Though also a bestseller at the time, "Just David" has rarely been reprinted since its release in 1916. It is the story of David, a charming little boy of 10 who is suddenly transplanted from a world of music (he plays the violin) in the mountains with his father, to the provincialism of a workaday small town. But even more, it is the story of how David transplants his own character, courage and happiness into the lives of the people he meets, and wins their love and respect.

Mary Marie Anderson describes herself as “a cross-current and a contradiction", the offspring of incompatible parents who couldn’t even agree about her name. When the two divorce when she is thirteen, Mary Marie is delighted since she’s always liked being different. None of the other girls have two homes and spend six months with each parent! Father will remain in their small town and mother will live in Boston with her family.

A classic of children's literature, Pollyanna's success led to Porter writing a sequel, Pollyanna Grows Up. Eleven more Pollyanna sequels, known as "Glad Books", were later published. Pollyanna has been adapted for film several times.

Martha is a feisty and articulate young woman, the daughter of a wheelwright, living in a Herefordshire village in Elizabethan England. Unusually for the time she is educated and so helps at the local school whilst longing to escape the confines and small-mindedness of a community riven by religious bigotry and poverty. As she is able to read and is well-versed in herbal remedies she is suspected of being a witch. When a landslip occurs - opening up a huge chasm in the centre of the village - she is blamed for it and pursued remorselessly by the villagers.

Miss Polly Harrington was content in her solitary life as a wealthy spinster, enjoying her quiet and orderly homestead in Vermont. She didn't care that her staff whispered and grumbled about her behind her back...she liked things the way they were. Until one day, a letter arrived from a far Western town, informing her of a newly-orphaned niece with nowhere to go.
