Sein Vorgesetzter versteht nicht, was er damit meint, und versucht seinen ehemals produktiven Angestellten zu motivieren. Doch was er auch macht, Bartleby ist sich sicher: "Ich möchte lieber nicht!"

The collision of good and evil in this magnifcent novella is brilliantly depicted when an honorable young sailor is tried for unwittingly killing his cruel master-at-arms. In this, his last work, Melville explores the conflict between social authority and individual freedom, justice, and abstract good.

After spending the summer of 1853 in the Berkshire Mountains, where he supposedly had a real life encounter with a lightning-rod salesman, Melville published "The Lightning-Rod Man". At the end of this short story, the lightning-rod salesman is exposed for the fraud that he is. However, that will not keep his successors from fanning out to the Middle West, where lightning storms abound and farmers are gullible.

Herman Melville, known primarily for his epic Moby Dick, also wrote a number of equally incisive, but much shorter stories. This collection contains four of his best: "Bartelby the Scrivner", "Benito Cereno", "Jimmy Rose", and "The Fiddler".

"Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" is a short story by the American writer Herman Melville, first serialized anonymously in two parts in the November and December 1853 issues of Putnam's Magazine, and reprinted with minor textual alterations in his The Piazza Tales in 1856. A Wall Street lawyer hires a new clerk who, after an initial bout of hard work, refuses to make copy and any other task required of him, with the words "I would prefer not to".

Gemeinsam mit dem Harpunier Queequeg heuert der Ich-Erzähler, der Matrose Ismael, auf dem Walfänger Pequod an. Dort erklärt Kapitän Ahab der Mannschaft das Ziel der Fahrt: Er will den weißen Wal "Moby Dick", der ihm einst das Bein abriss, jagen und erlegen. Die Mannschaft, aufgeheizt durch den charismatischen und wahnsinnigen Kapitän, schwört sich auf Ahab und dessen Ziel ein.

One day, he recruits a new clerk for his growing practice, the strangest man he has ever met. "Theatre Royal" is a series of radio dramas first broadcast by the BBC in 1953 and in the USA soon after. Starring many of Britain's finest actors, it was the only radio series in which Lord Olivier took a major role.

However, the lawyer quickly discovers that something is off with his new employee. When asked to perform any duties outside of writing, Bartleby responds with a canned "I would prefer not to." Soon Bartleby is living at the office and performing less and less at work.
