Es ist nur eine normale Bar in Downtown New York, in der Feierabenddrinks, Meckereien über Chefs und kleine Flirts an der Tagesordnung sind. Alles scheint wie immer - doch dann bricht das totale Chaos aus, und am Ende gibt es achtzig Tote. Eve Dallas ermittelt, spricht mit Augenzeugen, die wirr von Monstern und Bienen reden. Sie findet heraus, dass den Gästen ein chemischer Drogencocktail serviert wurde, der kurzfristige Wahnvorstellungen auslöst. Aber warum sollte jemand so etwas geplant haben?

Lieutenant Eve Dallas sieht sich mit einem ihrer schlimmsten Feinde konfrontiert - der Büroarbeit. Gerade als sie sich fast schon wünscht, ein neuer Fall würde sie von den Papierbergen erlösen, passiert etwas, das fast schlimmer ist als ein Mord: Isaac McQueen, ein gewalttätiger Pädophiler, den Eve kurz nach ihrer Ausbildung gefasst hat, ist aus dem Gefängnis geflohen. Eve Dallas und ihre Partnerin Peabody untersuchen ein scheinbar sinnloses Verbrechen: Ein Lebensmittelhändler wurde von drei drogensüchtigen jungen Männern ermordet - nur für den Kick? Es ist der erste Fall für Peabody, den sie leiten darf, und sie stolpert gleich in eine heikle Situation: Sie belauscht unfreiwillig ihre Kollegen Garnet und Oberman bei einer Unterhaltung, in der es eindeutig um Korruption geht. Eve und Peabody setzen alles daran, ausreichend Beweise zu finden, um das schmutzige Spiel der Cops zu enttarnen.

Es ist der bisher mysteriöseste Fall für Lieutenant Eve Dallas. Bart Minnock, Gründer von U-Play, einem gigantischen Computerspieleimperium, wird tot in seinem Haus aufgefunden. Die Freundin des Opfers ist gelähmt vor Trauer, und seine Partner bei U-Play sind aufrichtig geschockt. Der sympathische Millionär schien keine Feinde zu haben. Doch Erfolg zieht immer Neider nach sich, sobald es um viel Geld, Macht und Rivalitäten geht. Das weiß auch Roarke, Eves Ehemann und Konkurrent von Minnock.
