Swami Vivekananda made an unforgettable impression upon religious minds in America at the Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893. He spoke of the harmony of religions and the innate divinity of every human soul. The swami taught that true harmony of religions is based on the spiritual oneness of existence. There is one life that pulsates in the whole universe. Spiritual oneness transcends the limitations of race, culture, creed, and dogma.

The soul must be eternal. Why? In the first place we see that the soul is not matter. It is neither a gross body, nor a fine body, which we call mind or thought. It is neither a physical body, nor what in Christianity is called a spiritual body. It is the gross body and the spiritual body that are liable to change. The gross body is liable to change almost every minute and dies, but the spiritual body endures through long periods, until one becomes free, when it also falls away. 

This is the message of Shri Ramakrishna to the modern world: “Do not care for doctrines, do not care for dogmas, or sects, or churches, or temples; they count for little compared with the essence of existence in each man which is spirituality; and the more this is developed in a man, the more powerful is he for good. Earn that first, acquire that, and criticize no one, for all doctrines and creeds have some good in them. Show by your lives that religion does not mean words, or names, or sects, but that it means spiritual realization."

Allievo di Sri Ramakrishna. In questo libro una discepola americana di Swami Vivekananda riporta gli ammaestramenti che il Guru lasció a lei e ai suoi compagni durante la sua permanenza a Thousand Island Park dal giugno all'agosto 1895. This short account of Swami Vivekananda, the Vedantist who brought Hinduism to America, focuses on the years 1893 to 1897. After a famous speech at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, Vivekananda promoted his religious beliefs and practices by lecturing extensively across the United States, teaching and attracting devotees, producing a wealth of publications and tracts on Hinduism, encouraging vegetarianism, writing the first book on yoga to appear in America and so on, for a new and enthusiastic audience.

Gli Yoga sutra sono un sistema filosofico indiano dei primi secoli, e consiste di aforismi, come era costume presso i maestri indù che trasmettevano la loro conoscenza per tradizione orale. Swami Vivekananda, allievo diretto di Sri Ramakrishna e da lui definito Siddha (cioè saggio fin dalla nascita per meriti acquisiti nella vita precedente) ha tradotto dal sanscrito e commentato questo testo.

Il libro è tratto da una serie di insegnamenti e conferenze effettuate alla fine del 1800 in Inghilterra e negli Stati Uniti, in cui il maestro indiano, allievo filiale di Sri Ramakrishna, spiega, con parole semplici e accessibili a tutti, le quattro vie dello Yoga: Karma Yoga, la via del lavoro; Raja Yoga, la via della psicologia, Jnana Yoga, la via della conoscenza; Bhakti Yoga, la via della devozione.
