Pirate Radio

David was born and raised in the U.K. and after a somewhat uninteresting series of jobs, was bitten by the broadcasting bug in late 1965. After the closure of the pirate radio scene he emigrated to Canada and worked in both commercial radio and television. Although now retired, he still does the occasional voice-over.

Pirate radio represents magical rebellion. Pirate radio signifies creative protest. Pirate radio can change the world. Pirate radio (unlicensed radio broadcasting) has played a historically significant though usually ignored role in the greater cause of freedom of the press; though today other forms of broadcasting may seem to have eclipsed it, we still need to honor and advance pirate radio in order to maximize freedom of the press.

What a time it was. Suddenly, all across Nottingham, the UK's ninth biggest city, transmitters were crackling into life with another kind of voice, another kind of sound. In a way, we were back to the '60s. And in a way, we weren't. It all happened in the city of Robin Hood; but it could have been anywhere in the UK, where similar stories were being played out by like-minded individuals who were starting to realize that something was very, very wrong....
