When the gentle woodcarver Geppetto builds a marionette to be his substitute son, a benevolent fairy brings the toy to life. The puppet, named Pinocchio, is not yet a human boy. He must earn the right to be real by proving that he is brave, truthful, and unselfish. But, even with the help of Jiminy, a cricket who the fairy assigns to be Pinocchio's conscience, the marionette goes astray. Yet, when Pinocchio discovers that a whale has swallowed Geppetto, the puppet journeys into the ocean and risks his life to save his father, thereby displaying that he deserves to be a real boy.

It is a darker, more profound version than the popular Pinocchio by Disney, who made the story world-famous with the 1940 animated film. It is filled with absurd puppet-humor and abstract slap-stick—and it is the real version.

The famous novel written by the Tuscan writer Collodi, translated by Carol Dalla Chiesa, is read by the florentine Silvia Cecchini. Music by A. S. Sullivan.

Storia di un burattino è il titolo del romanzo ottocentesco che ha come protagonista un notissimo personaggio di finzione, appunto Pinocchio, burattino di legno al centro di celeberrime avventure. Si tratta di un classico della cosiddetta letteratura per ragazzi e fu narrato nel 1881 da Collodi (pseudonimo dello scrittore Carlo Lorenzini). Il personaggio di Pinocchio - burattino umanizzato nella tendenza a nascondersi dietro facili menzogne e a cui cresce il naso in rapporto ad ogni bugia che dice - è stato fatto proprio con il tempo.

Geppetto ist von dem Holzklotz begeistert und beginnt sogleich mit dem Schnitzen einer Holzpuppe, die er nach getaner Arbeit Pinocchio tauft. Zu Geppettos Erstaunen erwacht die Puppe zum Leben und reißt ihrem Schöpfer aus. Beim Versuch, Pinocchio wieder einzufangen, landet Geppetto sogar im Gefängnis, kommt dann aber wieder frei und findet Pinocchio ausgehungert und reumütig in seinem Haus.

It was a unique literary marriage of genres for its time. The story's Italian language is peppered with Florentine dialect features, such as the protagonist's Florentine name.
