Description

Portia Hastings has spent her life rescuing her younger sister from one scrape or another. But this time, she has to step through time to do it, following Miranda from the 19th century to the 18th. Almost immediately, Portia is beset by highwaymen, which might be the most exciting thing to happen to her in a long time, even if she’d never admit it.

When one of the highwaymen is injured, Portia makes the inexcusable mistake of helping him—she is trained as a doctor after all. Her travel companions abandon her, and she’s left at the mercy of a highwayman who demands she continue tending to his compatriot’s wounds.

Portia soon finds herself at a crumbling castle inhabited by the destitute Earl of Ravensford. Benedict Sterling is in desperate need of money, and his solution is a ball, where a wealthy bride will win the title of countess, even if it does come with one thunderously ill-tempered earl.

Portia agrees to a scheme to help Benedict look like a slightly more appealing bridegroom, while she continues to search for Miranda. Then, there’s the small matter of the castle, complete with a ghost intent on driving her out. But once Portia sets her mind on something, she’s not going anywhere.

Lovely Ending

This book was a wonderful end to the series. I've loved them all! Love the characters, the story, and our glances back into the past.

Much better than mirandas story

This, Rosalind and the original books are great. However I did not like Miranda’s adventure nor Nicolas. I find the couple is completely mismatched. In real life the most successful couples are those with the same values and social class but different in nature and temperament. I find the author tends to couple people together that are too alike in description initially then tweak one of the characters to be abit more feisty than the other. For example Portia and Benedict are both practical and ridden with responsibilities. Basically the boring type, but all of a sudden she is now adventurous and extremely cheeky, even a tease. She is also reckless in this book. Which makes Benedict look like he is the more careful responsible one who is also the more emotional out of the two. I think if Portia had this character from the beginning it would makes sense but the contrast between what she was and what she turns into is a schizophrenic level of change that no human being is going to go through in such a short period of time. Similarly, Miranda is the wild child that goes off on adventures and meets a man that is equally wreckless and free spirited? Yeah that never works in real life, at most it would be a fling. Long term compatibility for the most romantic and amazing couples usually involve one practical and grounded partner and the other that is slsightly more laid back. I do like her other books though. I just urge the author to have characters that would actually end up together in real life.
