Kay’s wonderful fiction based on troubadour France gets a lovely reading. What is more, the songs sprinkled throughout the book are here sung. It is so much more evocative than if the lyrics were simply read

Stunningly narrator. For a story that is so heavily about it’s songs, it’s lovely to hear someone really sing them! I read this book once in a hard copy before listening. Excited to read more from this author as well!

Excellent narrator. This story has rich world building, and the setting has music and sing writing as a key trait of the culture. The narrator sings some of the songs in the book, and has a good voice.

While this has a fantasy setting (two moons, light magic) the magic use is so small it is almost non-existent.

Strong male and female characters, who are flawed. The main character does develop, the supporting characters get a rush of development at the end.

Good foreshadowing.

This takes place between two countries. When in one setting the narrator used past tense. In the other present. It i found it distracting, especially since it didn’t have any other obvious purpose.

The only reason I finished this audiobook was the narrator. I’ve read books by the author and they were fine. This one though, absolutely not for me. No interesting characters. Tired tropes. Protagonists without agency. Just uninteresting from start to finish. I’m sure this book was enjoyable for some, and I hope many. It may have made for an interesting short story if brutal editing took place, but at times it felt like the author was paid by the word. I won’t be listening to anything else by this author.
