Hugo Award Winner for Best Series

Auberon is one of the first and most important colony worlds in humanity's reach, and the new conquering faction has come to claim it. Governor Rittenaur has come to bring civilization and order to the far outpost and guarantee the wealth and power of the Empire.

But Auberon already has its own history, a complex culture, and a criminal kingpin named Erich with very different plans. In a world of deceit, violence, and corruption, the greatest danger Rittenaur faces is love.

It’s the thing people who like the show forget

That it’s the writing and the social observation that make these books so damn good. The story is good, but so are hundreds of others. These books are some of the best science fiction ever bc of the page-by-page writing, not the plot.

Excellent

This is the greatness I have come to respect about Mr. Corey. Only thing I could ask for would be for more length. His Characters are so well described and believable. And as usual Jefferson Mayes is Perfect.

Not sure if this was necessary

It ties some loose ends but not sure if there is really much value in it. I could've not know and that would be fine. I still enjoyed it.

Some Meds in Your Sugar

I love it when otherwise mindless brain candy surprises me with a thoughtful if not deep question. Happens in this book.

Tight, Clean, Pure Expanse Perfection

In this reader's opinion, JSAC is/are putting out the finest Sci-Fi of it's kind right now. The Expanse stories are not exactly hard, opera, adventure or literary. They are all of these things and none of them. Somehow distinctive within well-worn genre settings. If the authors dig a bit deeply within modern SF tropes in their Expanse Novels, they can be forgiven, as that is perhaps the only reasonable critique for the series. By contrast, the novellas benefit from the limits their form places on the JSAC story style. There's not enough room for anything but the character revelations and thriller-quick plot movements that JSAC excel(s) at. All the happenings sit inside the political, psychological landscapes both familiar and wondrous that the Expanse series is best known for. It's a canvas that heightens each person and place within. The vivid colors and dimensions swirl off the page (or through the headphones) without spilling melodramatically, or ponderously over the top. It's just one space-bound thriller twist, or cool character flash after another.

Good, but short.

Great expanse story as always. It's a "novella" so it's going to be short. However, the story certainly needed more to make the short time just a bit more interesting. The massive cliffhanger at the end also disappointed me. Just as it started to REALLY pick up, BOOM. It's over. I will impatiently wait for my next journey through the excellent expanse universe. Worth your time, and money! Just, don't expect a detailed or as complete a narrative as one might be accustomed to in the normal series.

Another masterpiece.

It's definitely a dark tale. Just goes to show you that the Empire wasn't going to last forever anyway. Good job recycling a couple of familiar characters.

Decent

Just more filler for the series. It was decent, I guess. Another reminder that everyone is old now. Trying to humanize the Laconians and make them more sympathetic because they grew up in this system, and don't know or understand how or why it's wrong. Honestly, this whole thing could as easily have been told as a Sith/Empire story. Empire did nothing wrong. The rebels are terrorists. Oh, wait. Are we the bad guys? Gee, I didn't mean to be the bad guy. For a filler of a novella, it did its job. That's all it needed to do, so I'm giving it a higher rating than I would have if I'd read it as any kind of stand-alone novella.

A story-within-a-story, fantastic

I've been working my way through the expanse series. the locales the plot that characters the imagery all have been fantastic in each of the books and in each of these novellas. this novella is no different it just adds to the complete picture in the texture of the whole story helps make it more complete. Pros: - Jefferson Mays performance - the story line it was interesting intriguing it had me wanting more Cons: - it's a novella but it still seemed short - it's a great story but hard to spend an entire audible credit on it

Adventure of the new worlds

A wonderful addition to sharpen the lore of the James S.A. Corey universe! Highly recommend adding this to your library to make a great series even better.

Just a little more world building.

In the already deep and well defined world of The Expanse, this somehow manages to provide more depth.

Make Accounting Exciting Again

Great Story. An insightful addition to The Expanse universe. Also makes me wonder if we just met a certain "character" that shows up in a later book.

excellent work

jefferson mays is the only narrator who should ever read any expanse story... I have not been able to complete the earlier novellas, neither "the churn" nor the... second one, whose title I have forgotten, both of which I purchased. I'm sorry to that other narrator. it just wasn't working at all. this performance and the story itself were both of the caliber that I've come to expect from Corey and Mays. keep up the excellent work!

short

I'm guessing the authors don't know how to finish the series. this novella was short, easy, and skin deep. barely relevant to the main story. felt like listening to someone distract themselves from a story with a story.
