Description

From New York Times bestselling author Craig Alanson comes a thrilling new series that melds action-packed urban fantasy with his signature humor, read by none other than award-winning narrator R.C. Bray.

My name is Kazimir Wolfe. People call me "Kaz", except they don’t. I never use my real name; it’s too dangerous, for me and for anyone I meet.

I’m on the run from the law, who think I killed my aunt, and from whoever did kill her, because they want to finish the job. So, I move around a lot, working construction or whatever job I can find. It’s a lonely life. I don’t let anyone get close...people who get close to me end up dead. Why?

I’m a wizard. The world’s only wizard, as far as I know. I don’t have a wand or a sword, and I don’t ride a dragon. I carry a Glock, and drive around in a beat-up RV with a talking dog.

Yeah. The talking dog was a surprise to me, too. Duke is inhabited by the spirit of a 3,000-year-old wizard from Babylon, and he’s a good dog, but he is still a dog, and that’s a problem. Like, he still thinks squirrels are his mortal enemy. And that I don’t feed him enough. How did the spirit of a wizard reach across millennia, to our time? I don’t know.

The truth is, I’m not much of a wizard, because there’s not much magic in the world for me to work with. But there used to be magic. And magic is coming back as our world converges with the Nether.

Unless I can stop it.

I wanted to like this book.

The only thing that kept me going was the Narrator. There is a lot of good worldbuilding and urgency with the plot, but the characters spend most of the book bumbling around and over explaining every detail of modern life instead of following it. I felt like there was so much wasted potential for the characters. The promises made in the beginning did not match the payoff that was executed at the end. The main character was able to solve everything that came his way with on the fly ideas that should never work and zero consequences. He spends the story telling you that his companions are useless while they constantly say that they have trained hard to protect him. They are never given the chance to prove it. The plot sidelines them at the end and calls in characters that you are never given a reason to care about as help. The ending was so lackluster that it left me not wanting to find out what happens next.

Sloooooowwwww…😶 are we there yet?

Chapter 8 and dude and , warrior sidekick his magic dog are still figuring life in an RV. This isn’t a Sci Fi novel it’s a prolonged low income traipse across Mericas Midwest.

This story is a confused mix of time travel meet Contemporary Midwest meet standard US spy novel being chased by bag guys. Grey Man? Jack Ryan? Ethan Hunt? Menh.

Aimless without letting the other shoe drop. Still don’t know where the story is headed..?!. Except perhaps to another small town RV park.

Not. Sold. 😡

RC Bray was the wrong choice

After listening (and loving) RC Bray for the entire expeditionary force series (14 books x 16hrs each), i honestly just feel like he wasnt the right choice for this book. His voice is too raspy to sound like a the mid-twenties protagonist, its too hard to mentally separate him from the lead character in the ex-force series, AND its the same author and narrator, so Bray tends to use the same cadence and inflection so it just ends up sounding like Joe Bishop with magic…it doesnt help this book stand out. I hope podium picks another narrator for the next books. Also, the book was a little slow-paced for my liking, specially the first 10 chapters. If you’re looking for a modern wizard, just read the Dresden Files series, its a much better series than this one so far.

really enjoyable!

I almost didn't buy this book because of other reviews criticizing the narrator, but I'm so glad thar I did. he does sound older than someone in their early 20s, but it wasn't distracting at all, and he did a great job with the story. Action was great, it was really funny in places, and I loved Duke so much! I already bought book 2.

A fun first installment

An exciting modern fantasy with interesting world building and a Golden retriever to rival Skippys comedy

Weirdest ExForce book so far.

I keep wondering when the book will transition back to skippy and dirty monkeys. Did joe bump his head, is skippy a nanobot inside the dogs head. I don’t understand. Skippy did say this was his story… Joe if you can hear this it’s time to wake up! The elders are coming…!

Gets better each book

The first book is interesting and progressively becomes exciting. I enjoyed the perspectives of the supporting characters and the subtle sarcastic Easter eggs planted throughout. The narration is outstanding giving each character 'life'. I recommend the series even if you find the 1st novel become stagnant at moments.

If Skippy was a Talking Dog

If you really enjoy the Skippy-Joe banter from Expeditionary Force like me, then you should give this book a go. The story is ok nothing to write home about. The end seemed rushed and was kinda hard for me to finish had to keep rewinding cus I was zoning out.
