They were the Savages. Raiders from our distant past. Elites who left Earth to create tailor-made utopias aboard the massive lighthuggers that crawled through the darkness between the stars. But the people they left behind on a dying planet didn't perish in the dystopian nightmare the Savages had themselves created: they thrived, discovering faster-than-light technology and using it to colonize the galaxy ahead of the Savages, forming fantastic new civilizations that surpassed the wildest dreams of Old Earth.

Description
Legion Dark Ops has always been a unit shrouded in secrecy. Tasked with performing covert missions, its kill teams are filled with the best warriors from within the ranks of the Legion.
Kel Turner is one of the youngest legionnaires ever to be selected to its ranks. After many battles and trials, he is faced with the greatest challenge of his life - operating by himself on a remote planet at the galaxy's edge, a foot soldier for the policies of the duplicitous House of Reason, tasked with solving a crisis that would take ten kill teams to resolve.
Diplomats, spies, shadowy terrorist groups, and an enigmatic general work with and against Kel as he fights to save a society from itself. What can one operator do alone, separated from his kill team, fighting a war that has no name?
This lone operator doesn't know what it will take to win. He only knows he's not going to lose.

Disney's version of Sicario
I'm conflicted: I love the GE universe and most books, but this one felt like click-bait
It is rare for me to take the time to leave a negative comment. It actually takes more effort, because I try to be constructive. I think I will fail on this one.
The premise seems fair: young idealistic operator on solo mission, discovers that his preconceptions may not be accurate.
The book sets up:
his team that he has bonded with and is forced to leave behind
his solo travel where he meets nice folks (that he helps and leaves behind)
a world where the all powerful secret police appear to be honest (or are they? dunDunDUN! )
And then nothing really happens but a series of training stories that highlight that perhaps a secret police may have some bad apples, but the rest are a bunch of Disney Princesses.
I don't get it, even now with the announcement of "part 2". Is this meant to be the antithesis of all the hard boiled "can't trust anyone but you and your team" stories ? Maybe. But if so, this needs more writing.
You want a good guys story with real challenges, not some off screen "what is really going on?", then read "The Best of Us"

Best series opener to date
I really loved Dark Operator. The character building for Kel was amazing. I really feel for this guy and the way he is written in to the plot the relationships with other makes you truly feel for him.
I’m really looking forward to the future books.

This is an awesome Story
If you liked the Glaxys edge books youll love this its cut from the same cloth. You get invested in the characters the story is good its not dry you want to know whats going to happen next and Everyone they introduce is a real person you could meet not a total work of fiction. I espically loved his internal monologue about the things he encounters because while He is a Dark Ops legionnaire hes also human. Well Done I already bought the next few books to listen to.

The story behind the story!
I knew the storyline was going to be right up my alley. Doc Spears and I served in the same Special Forces unit years back and I knew there plenty of real-life examples ready to appear within fictional characters and scenarios...many you wouldn't believe if in non-fiction, so may as well have fun putting them to use in Dark Operator! No doubt quite a few veterans listening will be shaking their heads "yep, I could see it going down like that" ...Kudos for the work - Would appreciate better heads up on release dates from Audible/Amazon though, wouldn't have known this was out if a friend had not given me a heads up.

Re-record this one please.
I have (and love) all of the other G.E. titles on Audible but I couldn't make it past the first few chapters in this book. can't get past the narrator's pronunciation of the donks as "zee" . Do some research on the book / series you're reading guy... ALL of the others have pronounced it differently. Every time I hear it "zee" I'm ripped out of the story and have to mentally correct you.

Completely forgot to tell a story
So I want to start by saying I have not read any other Galaxy's edge book before this, however it is my belief that this book is a stand alone and doesn't require the other books. This story one and only focus is to tell you how cool the main character is for how military trained he is, there is more time spent talking about how he cares for his guns then introducing characters. Character are shuffled in and out with the purpose of either making the main character seem cooler, or on rare instances give him information he didn't have already (this being rare due to him always knowing everything). There is no conflict or character growth in this story, atleast not at the 2/3rd point that I writing this review as I have had just about enough of every scene of the main character telling us how much he loves being military and how military he is. Spoilers from this point. The plot revolves around him stopping a rebel militia group (once it can get to that after a large amount of the books run time just dedicated to showing you again, how cool he is and how he being military saves and helps everyone he meets) and he is working with the local dictator to stop the rebel group, however instead of even considering that the rebel group is fighting for equal opportunities for people to rise up the story is just about teaching the dictator to be a better dictator. The only reason I made it so far in the book was because I was sure it was going to turn around, the main character was going to switch sides and have to fight against his ideologies physically represented by the improvements he made to the other side. I am increasingly more convinced this is not the case as the story goes on, and after the main character sees how brutal the dictator is and says he likes him I'm honestly convinced he is suppose to be a villain. I will admit in the context of the story the "rebel" are framed as a terrorist group that is likely being controlled by another opposing person in office, however this just feels like a convenient excuse that lets the main character continue there beliefs. How would the main character react if he was challenged with squashing a rebel group that was just trying to bring change? and only lead to violence after peaceful ways where shown to be ineffective? would he still at the same, who knows because they feel no need to challenge the main character. To this point in the story the only challenge he has faced was not that he killed plenty of people, but if he used the right gun to do it. After finding out that writer is previous military this really starts to make a lot more sense, and the major reason I feel confident in saying hes not going to ever face any challenges is because of the fact that this entire book just feels like a self-incert fantasy where everything gets to be black and white and he doesn't have to face the ideological differences of others. I have so much more I could say on this but I honestly realize no one cares, people who like this book are going to like it just because it keeps saying military things, and I cant change that. I wish it would have atleast been a story but I guess that doesn't mater

Dark Operator
As always Galaxy’s Edge is on top of its game. Full of compelling characters and an awesome storyline, this is definitely worth picking up. It has the humanity of The Best of Us but feels like The Order of The Centurion with the action and intrigue. This is definitely worthy of GE.

Simply excellent book
Doc Spears has knocked it out of the park with this first installment of what I hope to be a long running story within the larger Galaxy’s Edge universe. He managed to capture the timelessness of the warrior mindset layered artfully under the Sci-fi background.
The timelessness of the basic fundamentals of gun fighting and gunfighters comes through in every chapter.
The detailed description of life in DO, and it’s place within the larger Legion, fit seamlessly into what would be the natural progression of the legion founded by Gen. Rex.
One of my favorite elements of the GE universe is the breadth of time it encompasses. Doc Spears’ focus on what I call the “middling years”, between the end of the Savage Wars and the end of the Republic, is the most fascinating to me. These thousands of years speak to our own time; and the unchanging nature of human nature applied to a technologically advanced time reinforces the fact that while our circumstances change, humans living in a society will forever exhibit the same strengths, weaknesses, motivations, organizational proclivities, and inclinations.
The main character, Kel, is as genuine a person as I’ve ever read in a work of fiction. I know several real life “Kels”, and Doc Spears has managed to capture the essence of what makes a real warrior tick, and what goes through their minds.
Stephen Dexter was an excellent choice to perform the book, and I hope he comes back for the next one.

Authenticity at the very heart of the story
I love reading authors with a background that can feed into the subject from personal experience and this book draws heavily from that real world experience.
Tolkien and Lewis drew from their experiences in both World Wars, Haldeman served in Vietnam, and Carr spent an entire career in the GWOT.
Military SciFi is not about accurate and plausible small unit tactics, technical gear descriptions, or assaults out of starships, just like fantasy isn’t really about swords, magic, and dragons. Somehow they are both at their core about the heart of man and the state of humanity.
This book specifically is about the heart of a warrior, a heart that remains steadfast regardless of service, country... and galaxy.
The narrator is new to the series and adds a great voice to the story. Engaging and flexible, his range adds depth to each character.
Check it out and get hooked. Circle back around to the original series when you get the chance too and you won’t be disappointed!
