Description

A new world. A thousand threats. Welcome to The Continent.

Felix's life on Earth had become a series of dead-end jobs, ruined relationships, and rotating apartments smaller than most postage stamps. By all accounts, even his own, he was a coward. Too afraid to move forward, to take risks. Yet when given the chance to choose between risking his life or walking away from a deadly encounter, he didn't hesitate.

Moments before his untimely demise, Felix was snatched from earth and thrust into a magical world known only as "The Continent". Empowered by the "System", he learns that he can strengthen himself through combat and dedication. To survive, he'll have to push himself beyond his limits, or else fall to the monsters all around him.

Levels, stats, and magic. Death is the start of a terrible fate, but if he lives...no one knows what he will become.

Proof that the genre is still alive and well

The Story :

Pretty great. The world you are shown is a limited scope, but with lots of potential to be expanded. The Character is Likeable, almost fell into a trope at the intro but sidestepped the worst of the "saving the damsel and transmigrating after the sacrifice" trope. He played with themes of altruism in the main character without making the character preachy or righteous. Its a nice reminder that a character can be heroic without being an overbearing bore. It also felt really epic, like the stakes were high and the boss fights were creative and kept me hanging on each word. The setting for the story was also A+ super interesting.

The Litrpg:
Done really well. I like alot of the unique ideas author used, It felt really customizable , rather than a linear path that the character had no choice in. That is always the better choice imo. my only gripe on this is that it did feel like the character was given a massive cheat advantage, [minor spoiler here, not really but sorta] , it is sorta reasonable considering he was being min-maxed against his will to some degree. I also personally always like tank/monk/magus builds so this was kinda fun to read for that. Tired of agility assassins and vanilla warriors.

The Writing:

Overall its a solid body of work. Im not an expert writer so I can only critique lightly. I usually listen and read audiobooks at the same time...well not at the same time. i switch back and forth depending on what im doing. when i work or drive i listen, at night or breaks I like to read. When I was reading (not as noticable when listening) I felt that it was a bit wordy in places and I was getting really impatient and had to resist really hard to not skip entire paragraphs. Take that how you will, i still enjoyed it alot.

Recomended? :
Hell yeah lol it was great. I cant wait for the 3rd book i cant beleive i have to wait a month!

This is a Litrpg series worth double what you paid

Very good story.
Nice Progression from nothing to a up and coming great man.
Lots of intense scenes that will keep you from studying or getting work done.
Travis Baldree, what more can you say that hasn't been said a billion times, heck I'll say it
again. Travis can make toilet paper read like a romance novel. I just hope he doesn't bail on
us ever since he likely will become a soon to New York Times Best Seller.
I am almost done Book 6 and I think it's the best of the series so far, I hope Book 7 comes
out soon so I don't have to skip a beat.

Buy it Resonate Review, Infinite Mind of Word, Primordial QWERTY.

Checks most of the boxes

Pretty standard for a Lit rpg. As usual getting through the begining is the tough part because weve all heard it before. Its GOOD. Like a fusion between "He who fights with mosters" and "Defiance of the fall". But where as those books have things that make them unique like a overly eccentric MC or crazy world building this book kinda falls short. Nothing too bad to point out other than the unimaginative cursing but nothing too unique and impressive either. But the crazy ending was good enough for me to want to look out for the sequel. I won't be in a rush to get it but i probably will.

Travis Baldree usually doesn't miss but his guttural monster voice was a bit much this book could barely understand him.

Didn't regret the credit.

Amazing balance of detail and progression

Writing a review for anyone who happens on the series. Read all books so far except recent one and they are all amazing. Highly recommend and would say it’s worth your credits. One of my fav litrpg series so far on here

decent enough and entertaining

although the characters are kinda flat in this, the premise and world building after pretty cool, so those kinda even out. Fun enough of a listen to give the second book a try.

Great series

Ignore the low star reviews, this series is quite good.
The MC is good, very likable and develops at a nice rate, yes he does become powerful but that is what I like, the overall plot is quite enjoyable, the author switches to different characters which I generally do not like except in this case the author does a nice job and the side characters are likeable, id say its similar to He Who Fights With Monsters with regards to different character perspectives. Lastly the performance is amazing as you would expect from Travis Baldree. Ignore the low star reviews and you will be pleasantly surprised

Update: I have currently finished book 7 and oh boy the only issue I have is there is no book 8, really tho this is an amazing series its now in my top three of this genre and I have all the good series and I mean all of them. Originally I passed this series by about 5 or 6 times because I made the mistake of focusing on the negative reviews on the US side of Audible and given there were quite a few negative reviews I figured this series was trash, now I figure most of those negative reviews are just trolls trying to review bomb this series for whatever reason or another, like I said before give this series a go and I bet you will enjoy it very much

First I’ve heard of the genre

This has been my first experience in the LitRPG genre and I was not sure what to expect. What I got surpassed any expectations I had for it. Performance of the narrator was a bit slow for a lot of it though for me but that’s easily fixed listening at 1.4x speed. Can’t wait to see where the story goes from here.

better off reading the book

The story isn't bad but pointless swearing throughout detracts from the experience a bit. The overacting really ruins it. You are better off just reading the book.

One of my Favorites

A great engaging lit RPG, really enjoyed Felix's growth from his first arrival on the continent to the ending of the book.

Disappointing ending

This is not a bad litrpg book, but not one of the bests either. It starts like the standard of the genre : hero is somehow transported into another world where people have stats and skills.
The thing that bothers me the most is that half the book is just the hero alone fighting monsters, it gets boring pretty fast, I’d have liked him to have more interractions with other people.
There is also the fact that the hero is always saved by dumb luck or a skill he just gets out of the hat to save the day, so don’t expect too elaborate fighting strategies.
And when he finally meets other people and it gets better, the author chooses to make it boring again by making him end up alone again.
I fear starting the second book because I feel it will be just the same as the beginning of the first book, without the novelty of the mechanics to enternain a little.
If you’ve read book 3 of « Skyward » by Brandon Sanderson, well I fear it will be just as tedious.

I don't think my words can do this justice

I feel like I could write an essay on why I despised this book so much, but most of it will probably just be incoherent ramblings about personal preferences regarding fantasy and litrpg fiction in general.

This book utterly fails as a LitRPG. The fun of this genre is having a protagonist either outsmart the system they're subjected to to come out victorious, or struggle against it, desperately flailing in the face of adversity.

This book throws absurd hurdles (read: warheads) at our protagonist, ones he has no reasonable or credulous way to overcome. To combat this 'inbalance,' the author just throws bullshit, arbitrary and non-deterministic power-ups at him CONSTANTLY so that he can just survive. This never stops, it's the way Felix overcomes every obstacle in his path - or rather, I should rephrase that to say it's how the author has Felix overcome said obstacles.

Because he sure as shit doesn't do it himself.

The author basically rubs your face in it too. Several times clearly pointing out every one of his successes are because of luck.

I feel like I'm being trolled.

He's gifted myriad skills and powerups, each one used and discarded, never to be used cleverly to overcome adversity, or cleverly at all.

In my opinion, the biggest sin a LitRPG can make is to inundate the protagonist with powerups and skills they never explore or use to the fullest. The bloat just makes it all feel pointless and uninteresting.

The biggest sin a fantasy story can make is to ratchet up the severity of the scope and threat so much, that you actively NEED said absurd narrative devices to even have the protagonist succeed - and even WITH them he shouldn't! Felix has no right to come out on top here, but instead of feeling vicarious triumph through him when he does, I only feel disgust at how absurd everything was, and how much time I wasted.

I'm not even going to get into the infuriating arc with the assassin. I think I've conveyed my disgust sufficiently that I won't be stupid enough to forget my time with this and buy the second book.

Don't do it, future me! You'll regret it.

too much stats

the over abundance of stats keep breaking the flow of the story and every achiement feels cheaply earned via plot armor.

Might be too much LitRPG

Roger Ebert advised judging a movie by what it wants to be. Judge horror movies as a horror movie.

So I give this a high rating. This is a very stats-focused story. Nearly every page has lots of stats on it. Advancements are frequent. If you're familiar with the Threadbare series, about twice as much stats as that series. Perhaps three times as many as Dungeon Crawler Carl.

That all said, now I'll complain, there are too many stats for me. Also, despite some tough times near the beginning, too many times the MC gains multiple levels and blocks of 30 stat points. Often he gains 10 skill levels in something in the course of a page. These frequent sudden jumps cheapen the process. In the series I previously mentioned, such jumps only occurred after major events.

Still, the performance is great. The MC is likable and reasonably smart. The action is good. The action starts quickly. I enjoyed it.

However, the author should tone down the barrage of benefits for his hero in future stories, lest they become meaningless.

LITRPG at its finest. Magic / Mayhem / Monsters

First off lets start with WOW and how refreshing this book is.
LITRPG, Fantasy, Assassins, Frost Giants, Magic, We got everything that makes a book good in here. I honestly lost sleep because I couldn’t put it down. I had to finish, had to know the next step. Spend the credit, pick this up. So good!
Also the author was able to make the MC likable and relatable. He moves through multiple moral quandaries and doesn’t go all full white knight on us thank the gods! I find a lot of authors make the MCs stupid and unpalatable, trying to push the whole, never will I struggle or do something morally objectionable. I loved the MC almost immediately and we got to learn about him before entering in the secondary characters. This is another huge plus on this book. I mean how many books out their don’t let you learn about the MC before hitting you with 100 secondary characters to the point where you are just lost. This allowed me to get invested in the story before all the really crazy happened. Let me tell you it happened. Excellent story, Excellent Ending. CANNOT WAIT TILL BOOK 2. Don’t pass this up.

Reads like a cut and paste job.

Reads like the author cut and pasted clips from random litrpgs and then changed the names. Suddenly the character is in a game world and not really questioning it. Just so weird on the flow. I got through 2/3 of the book and I just couldn't muster up any more interest to finish it.

Skills are better that stats? Really?

The power scaling is absolutely stupid. One second a character is moving so slow the MC can easily parry a stab without the training to do so, the next MC doesn’t think they can beat him. And skills are stronger than stats? That is about the dumbest thing ever Batman is more skilled than Superman but Superman is f***ing Superman. No amount of skill can overcome overwhelming strength or speed.

LitRPG + Isekai + GrimDark

Spends too much time torturing the MC to drive growth. Ends with a (predictably) less than happy ending. Artificially long listening time because of re-reading of RPG stats.

Baldree brings Gonnella's masterpiece to life

I discovered this story on RR when it originally started and got sucked into it pretty hard to the point that I've had the Patreon sub ever since. Between the great writing, heart clenching cliff hangers and non stop action, Felix's story was really hard to pull down and led to many readings way too late into the night.

I was a bit anxious about the audiobook because I wasn't sure how it would translate to the litrpg feel and I am happy to say Baldree nailed it. Even though I've already read this initial part of the story, the audio book really pulled me in and added an extra depth to the world that I didn't know was there. From Felix's survival struggles in the beginning to his advances later on, the audiobook is just pure joy to listen to.

If you're looking for a great story with an awesome narration, this is the one for sure.
