Description

Evan Smoak - government assassin gone rogue - returns in Hellbent, an engrossing, unputdownable thriller from Gregg Hurwitz, the latest in his #1 international bestselling Orphan X series.

Taken from a group home at age twelve, Evan Smoak was raised and trained as an off-the-books government assassin: Orphan X. After he broke with the Orphan Program, Evan disappeared and reinvented himself as the Nowhere Man, a man spoken about only in whispers and dedicated to helping the truly desperate.

But this time, the voice on the other end is Jack Johns, the man who raised and trained him, the only father Evan has ever known. Secret government forces are busy trying to scrub the remaining assets and traces of the Orphan Program and they have finally tracked down Jack. With little time remaining, Jack gives Evan his last assignment: find and protect his last protégé and recruit for the program.

But Evan isn't the only one after this last Orphan - the new head of the Orphan Program, Van Sciver, is mustering all the assets at his disposal to take out both Evan (Orphan X) and the target he is trying to protect.

One of the best of the entire genre EVER

An excellent plot, the perfect narrator for the characters and some of the best descriptive writing you'll encounter. You'll want to rewind many parts so you don't miss the detail of the writing. I can't wait for the next one. X

The Best Book In The Series

Yes, there are plot holes and clichés worthy of eyerolling in this Action-Thriller, but the relentless pacing, mind's-eye quality description, pulse-quickening violence, and tech/tactic excellence more than make up for the deficiencies. In this installment in the 'Orphan X' series, Gregg Hurwitz sends his Equalizer/Jason Bourne character on a 'Buddy-Cop'-styled mission that demonstrates Evan Smoak's unsurpassed training & experience (while simultaneously showing his uncommon empathy, ethics & desire for redemption) and presenting a legitimate threat - his former Black-Ops colleagues are getting dangerously close - and revealed to be working for powerful forces.. the protagonist is in nailbiting jeopardy from Chapter One. It takes some suspension of disbelief, but this action-packed story is a genuine rollercoaster ride.. full of brilliantly choreographed unarmed combat, knife fights, gun battles, and car chases.
Less fortunately, Hurwitz continues to treat this cartoonish stuff so seriously (like his kids' lives depend on success) that the melodrama is almost laugh-inducing at times.

Scott Brick compounds that offense in this recording. His tone is emotive, but whispery and far too serious. Once again, setting playback speed to 1.15X is required to make up for Brick's signature plodding pacing and irritating cadence, but he does a passable job overall.

Should you decide to buy 'Hellbent', my advice is to set aside reservations and take this book for what it is: a relatively silly action-adventure.. but if you can do it, it's quite the enjoyable adventure. The 'Orphan X' series is well-worth reading (much superior to 'The Gray Man' or 'Jack Reacher' in my opinion), and this 9/10 star third episode is worth a Credit.

I have Listened to the jack Ryan series the Jason Bourne serious this one is by far the best of them all Scott Brick is the perfect narrator and I will definitely be continuing on and on and on and when I’m done with the series I’ll probably start from the beginning and do it all over again; saying Greg Hurwitz sticks the ending

The best of the Orphan series

Orphan X must stop the forces trying to eliminate him - can he do it? You are left wondering through the adventure. I really enjoyed all three books - but this one the most. #Audible1

Funny that I read this while watching "Hawkeye" and enjoyed the parallels. Great story with grit and heart and action. And Scott Brick is a rock star!

Easily earns 5 stars!

I was not a huge fan of author Gregg Hurwitz until he released Orphan X two years ago. Evan Smoak is one of the most compelling new protagonist to be introduced in the suspense thriller genre during recent years. The second book titled The Nowhere Man arrived a year ago. I wrote a 3 star review of The Nowhere Man which is wrong and which I regret (and which I wish I could rewrite). Hellbent, the just released third novel in the Evan Smoak series released today, is outstanding in every way. Scott Brick's narration is pitch perfect.

OUTSTANDING! Hurwitz writing & Brick narrating!!

I cannot believe someone gave this a one star! No review left either. Not fair to the author or other readers.
This book is such a sensational addition to the Orphan X series. I could not stop listening to this the once I turned it on. When Charles Van Sciver locates and kills Jack Johns. Evan watches helplessly on a virtual screen produced by a specialized contact lens. He knows his next mission will be a personal one. Evan next travels to where Johns was killed, he finds a hidden message pointing him where to go next. He thinks there's a package waiting for him to protect. He finds the place and a 16 year old girl (Joey) who tries to kill him. It takes a little while but he finally realizes that she's the package. On the heels of finally subduing her, here come the black SUVs containing Van Sciver's men to kill them both.
It's a race to get to one of his safe houses and hack a computer taken from one of VanSciver's men. He and Joey believe information contained on it will lead them to VanSciver. Meanwhile VanSciver along with his closest subordinate and Candy McClure are killing their way through the orphans trying to find them.
Ok, so this pretty much happened in the first 1/4 of the book. Now everyone is getting started. Make yourself comfortable because once you start you are not going to want to miss a single word.
Scott Brick is his brilliant self! He and Gregg Hurwitz make an amazing team.
I can't say enough about this book. This is one of the best I've listened to in a long time. MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!'

Great Addition To The Series, Action Packed!

I'm not a reviewer. I just know what I like and I really enjoy this author, this series and Scott Brick is my favorite narrator so, for me, this is the winning combination I wait for on Audible.
Worth my wait and my credit.

FanFreakinTastic

Make no mistake, Evan Smoak is back and better than ever, and yes that includes the 1st in the series... An edge of your seat ride that keeps comin’ at ya... I literally found myself scootching forward in anticipation of the next event the tension was so well wrought...Love the next gen orphan thing, and Joey is one to be reckoned w/, and Vanskyver is a superb Bondian style villain... Imo what makes this the best so far is an utterly masterful plot, superbly sequenced action, and character interplay w/ impressive emotional depth... Most of all I dug the maturity of Orphan X, and his questioning, adjusting, and plain scrappin’ things when needed to get it right... Very satisfying resolution, and boy howdy sets up for a ripper of a next installment;). Narration was superior as usual... Worth the read/listen and only complaint is that it was over too soon... I actually stopped at times as I saw the end approaching so I could draw out the enjoyment a little longer;). Go ahead, you know ya’ wanna;). Enjoy...

Bring the thunder

Evan Smoak's commandment to “Never make it personal” literally goes out the window with the death of his mentor, Jack. But bloodlust gets stalled as he is forced to take on a rescue mission – Jack’s last assignment to him. Now he has a new dilemma – how to mix revenge and rescue without blowing either or both missions. The young girl, Joey, that he is now stuck with, forces him to face what he used to be before the Orphan program made him into who he is now, and this stirs conflicting feelings that he would rather not face. They are a distraction to his revenge obsession. But Joey’s distractions provide the heart and humor to the story, and even inspire Evan to start making some new commandments of his own – “Don’t fall in love with plan A”.

There are some minor nits to pick – the constant vodka and fire arms tutorials get a little old, and the sub plot with his neighbor, Mia, was an unnecessary sideline in this outing. But setting those aside, I still enjoyed the inventiveness of Evan’s schemes to vanquish the bad guys, and the continued character growth. A strong willingness to suspend disbelief is needed for this series, but if you are willing and able to just go for the ride, then Evan will take you on one wild roller-coaster, tugging on your heartstrings at the same time.

Just don't like the narrator

I keep coming back to the Orphan X series because I like the characters and the plots, but I just cannot stand the narrator. I know most people like him, so it must just be me, but he reads everything as if he is THE BATMAN, breathless and melodramatic and quivering. It's like nails on a blackboard to me and totally disrupts the enjoyment of the story. I guess I'll try reading one on Kindle and give up on the audio versions.

Best in series so far!!

I read the first book in the series and it was great. I did not read the second book because of reviews that revealed Evan was in captivity during much of the book and was tortured. I just can’t deal with torture. So, this third book was excellent and I can’t wait for the next installment!!

Loved it!

As usual, I was thoroughly engaged throughout the book. Evan's dimensional "being" is heartwarming and frightening at the same time. Plenty of action and I loved Joey, Enough said. A great read...

Rated X for AWESOME!

When Evan Smoak's "Do you need my help?" is answered by in the affirmative by the only father figure X has ever had, the story leaps into action. X must break several of the Commandments he has lived by for 20 years, the most important of which is to never let it get personal. X doesn't do normal life; he finds it too complicated and messy, and he is totally untrained for it. Yet, in this tale, he is bombarded with demands for normal relationships-- from Jack Johns, from Mia and her son, from Joey. And at the same time, he must protect himself and Joey from former orphans we have already met. And into this mix, someone calls his Nowhere Man line begging for help from one of the worst gangs in the world.

The story is full of top-notch action, but also plenty of soul searching and growth for Evan. This saves it from just being emotionless killing. There is tension, grief, fear for the deaths of those we have come to love and respect, and fist-pumping retribution.

The story of Orphan X could very well end here and it would be a satisfying trilogy, but the ending hints that there could still be more left for the Nowhere Man to do.

Scott Brick does make some mistakes in sentence emphasis, but all in all, he does a great job giving voice to all the characters so he still gets 5 stars.

If this is your genre, you will love the series, especially this one.
