Fresh off his first mission back with the CIA, Court Gentry secures what seems like a cut-and-dried contract job: A group of expats in Paris hires him to kidnap the mistress of Syrian dictator Ahmed Azzam to get intel that could destabilize Azzam's regime. Court delivers Bianca Medina to the rebels, but his job doesn't end there. She soon reveals that she has given birth to a son, the only heir to Azzam's rule - and a potent threat to the Syrian president's powerful wife. Now, to get Bianca's cooperation, Court must bring her son out of Syria alive.

But his first mission makes him wish he had stayed on the outs when a pair of Chinese agents try to take him down in Hong Kong. Normally the Chinese prefer to stay eyes-only on foreign agents. So why are they on such high alert? Court's high stakes hunt for answers takes him across Southeast Asia and leads to his old friend, Donald Fitzroy, who is being held hostage by the Chinese.

Before he was the Gray Man, Court Gentry was Sierra Six, the junior member of a CIA action team. In their first mission, they took out a terrorist leader, at a terrible price. Years have passed. The Gray Man is on a simple mission when he sees a ghost: the long-dead terrorist, but he's remarkably energetic for a dead man. A decade of time hasn't changed the Gray Man. Description
From Mark Greaney, The New York Times best-selling author of Gunmetal Gray and a coauthor of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan novels, comes a high-stakes thriller featuring the world's most dangerous assassin: the Gray Man.
Court Gentry's flight on a CIA transport plane is interrupted when a security team brings a hooded man aboard. They want to kick Gentry off the flight but are overruled by CIA headquarters. The mystery man is being transported to England where a joint CIA/MI6 team will interrogate him about a mole in Langley.
When they land in an isolated airbase in the UK, they are attacked by a hostile force who kidnaps the prisoner. Only Gentry escapes. His handlers send him after the attackers, but what can one operative do against a trained team of assassins? A lot, when that operative is the Gray Man.

My last Gray Man novel
I used to enjoy the Gray man books. Always a bit silly, but usually a good story and it held some suspense. I guess Greaney has run out of steam because his latest is just an unbelievable bore. The plot is absurd, there are so many plot holes (ah yes the Russian Spetsnaz troops - 30! can't keep 9 American special forces troops at bay, even though they knew they were inbound? As I got near the end of the book it was obvious Greaney was just typing nonsense, trying to finish it, screw it if it doesn't make sense. A good thriller works because it is believable, but Mission Critical just isn't. For example, an escaping spy gets an executive jet owner to fly her to the UK - and she says she will pay later. Come on. And it takes 12 hours to get from Washington to London. Even with fuel stops (why 3 not 2) he writes that it takes 12 hours? And who pays for the fuel at each stop?
Sad all around.

GREAT STORY Disgusting technical production.
I listened intently to the diminishing capability of the Gray Man and was saddened by how the character has become more lucky than fierce.
The Audible Production became a posted together mess of clips as I noticed from chapter 56 to the end. This brought me very close to calling it quits and asking for my first ever refund in a 200 title collection. Deteriorating character coupled with a lazy and rushed audio production should leave this only for the devout fan.

Great fun but...
I've really enjoyed listening to the Gray Man audible series whilst running, as I loathe running and the non-stop action makes the books an excellent diversion.
Up until this one I've really enjoyed the nuances in Jay's reading. I was always impressed at how he subtly moved from voice to voice with the different characters and imbued a sense of individuality in each voice.
However I'm British, and holy crap the accents in this one are jarring. Maybe the accents in the other books were jarring to natives of those locations. Hopefully none of the future books are set in the UK.

Greaney at his Best (with Jay Snyder)!!!!
Once again Mark Greaney has pulled another rabbit out and has written another outstanding book. This book takes off with a literal bang Ok, maybe two bangs!
When Court Gentry catches a ride on a Gulf Stream belonging to the CIA he's told there will be a slight detour. Other operatives will be boarding with a prisoner. They will be dropped off at another location and then Court will be taken to DC. The plane is attacked at the second location, all operatives are killed and the prisoner is abducted. Only an injured flight attendant and Court are still alive. Court goes after the bad guys.
Meanwhile, in Washington, a safe house has been targeted by the same group for destruction. What the group didn't know was that a former Russian operative that Court brought in was staying there. That was two books ago in Gunmetal Gray. The operative is Zoya and she's almost as good as Court.
All of this takes place in about the first 1 - 1 1/2 hours.
Court is chasing killers in Britain. Zoya has believed for the past 14 years that her father is dead. After Suzanna Brewer shows her pictures of the scene of her father's death, Zoya realizes they are staged. She believes he's still alive. Her search takes her to Britain.
After many months of not seeing each other Court and Zoya's paths collide ...
This book is so fast paced with not a single dull moment. No wasted words, no lulls or fillers. I hang on each word and was only sorry when it was over. This is a rare book in that I will probably listen to it again!
This book is an EXCELLENT addition to the Gray Man series and has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!!
Jay Snyder is the voice of Court Gentry and I truly hope he continues to do this series. He does an outstanding job narrating as always.
If you found this review helpful please indicate so.
Thank You.

Superb!! Mark Greaney is at the top of his game!
For me the best espionage thriller author of all time is Vince Flynn. Flynn died far too early almost six years ago. Mark Greaney and Ben Coes have both arrived at the same level as Vince Flynn. MISSION CRITICAL is the 8th novel in Greaney's Gray Man/Court Gentry series. (British author Tom Wood with his Victor the Assassin series probably deserves to be on the short list.) If one's genre of choice is mystery/thriller this novel is a must listen; espionage thrillers simply do not get better than this. Greaney is a master whether writing novels in his Gray Man series or in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series. As usual Jay Snyder narrates superbly.
I wish all audio books had publisher's summaries as well done as the one for Mission Critical. It sets up the plot beautifully without any spoilers.
Shelley of Raleigh NC writes the very best mystery/thriller reviews. They are easy to find because they are almost always first in the review list for any book. For a complete review of Mission Critical read her review.

Gripping
I have read this series from the beginning. I got hooked on the series with book one and it has become one of my favorites.
The book is well written and is packed with continuous action. Greaney grabbed my attention right at the beginning of the story and held it throughout. Court Gentry is the Grey Man and now is a contractor with the CIA instead of an employee. I enjoyed getting together with the regular characters and meeting some new ones. Sometimes the continuous action exhausted me, but I just could not put the book down. I cannot wait for the next Grey Man story.
The book is seventeen hours. Jay Snyder does an excellent job narrating the story. Snyder has been the narrator from the beginning of the series. I like it when they keep the same narrator throughout the series.

Excellent book and awesome narration..
Boo-hoo! Another great read in the Gray Man series bites the dust. And I loved it. But, boy! This time Court got the hell beat out of him twice by Jon Hines, a 6’9 giant monster, almost 3 times, if Court hadn’t finally given him all that he deserved.
There was so much excitement and killing in this I couldn’t even begin to guess how many died. Good guys and bad.
And I liked that Court had a little romance, everything off-screen, with Zoya, but I thought it was a little silly why she was so angry with him, clear up until the end.
And the F-bomb was used 118 times.
And, I was glad to see Hightower again. He had some good and funny lines. As for Suzanne, yeah, I don’t get that at all! Why the hell Hanley didn’t send Hightower after her instead of having her keep her job is beyond me.
Anyway, I do look forward to the next Gray Man book, whenever that might be.
As to the narration: Jay Snyder is a wonderful narrator. His voices for everyone are just awesome!

Another Fantastic Gray Man Tale
I waited patiently for the release of this novel and it was well worth the wait! It was EXACTLY what I needed during a slow moving February in a season full of disappointing releases(I also waited patiently for) by other well known writers....
Thanks Gray Man....exactly what I needed!!!

The Sum of All Fears
Mark Greaney is the #1 New York Times Best-selling co-author of more than six books in the Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series and one of my all time favorites authors. This month he released the 8th thrilling novel in his own, original, Gray Man series and if you’ve followed my reviews over the years, you may know that I’m a big fan of Mark‘s and that I always devour his works with abandon.
The story follows, once again, Court Gentry aka The Gray Man, the deadliest assassin in the World. He is recalled to the United States by his handler at the Central Intelligence Agency, but when the secret CIA plane is attacked by hostile forces in the United Kingdom and the others onboard killed or injured, Court takes things into his own hands and gets into the fight with guns and even a grenade launcher blazing.
Mission Critical is one of the best books from Mark Greaney and that’s saying something because all his previous works are great! I’m thinking about Back Blast when I make this statement, since that one was a blast from start to end, just like this one is. Filled with over the top action and scenarios, espionage, covert operations, moral dilemmas, betrayals and incredible gun fights, all driven by a solid narrative and vivid lifelike characters, Mission Critical is a book all Thriller fans should experience for themselves.
The audiobook version of Mission Critical is performed by Jay Snyder, just like all the other books in this awesome series. He is the perfect narrator to give life to Court Gentry. Jay fills the listener with a sense of urgency and keeps him glued to the earbuds for hours on end. If you choose the audiobook, you will find yourself immersed in Court’s adventures, ignoring phone calls, people talking around and with you and forgetting that you still had some work scheduled, at least that is what happened to me in the three days it took to finish the book.
Jay Snyder handles accents very well, he gives different voices to the characters and keeps it easy for the listener to differentiate between them. You can feel the intensity of the action and you’ll hold your breath many times during the performance.
This book should satisfy any hardcore fans of Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Daniel Silva or Vince Flynn. I am looking forward with much enthusiasm to the next Mark Greany thriller.

Good story line but very detailed .
A Lot of the story explains various guns in detail and if you don't know anything about them you get lost in the words.

Hope it was a temporary dip
By far the worst book in the series. Almost regretting I purchased it.
Now while this has been said, Greaney is still far better then most in this genre
