The spectacular new audiobook from the best-selling author of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, ‘one of our greatest living authors,’ New York Magazine.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has.

In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Messages begin to appear, scratched out in chalk on the pavements. There is someone new in the House. But who are they and what do they want? Are they a friend or do they bring destruction and madness as the Other claims?

Lost texts must be found, secrets must be uncovered. The world that Piranesi thought he knew is becoming strange and dangerous.

The beauty of the House is immeasurable; its kindness infinite.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"What a world Susanna Clarke conjures into being.... Piranesi is an exquisite puzzle-box." (David Mitchell)

"It’s always great to have some fiction to heartily recommend, and while there’s been stiff competition this year, Piranesi by Susanna Clarke has won out in the end. A masterful work of weird fiction, it’s a novel that grips, perplexes and moves you, usually all at once!" (Observer, The Best Books of 2020)

"The fiction, nonfiction and poetry that deepened our understanding, ignited our curiosity and helped us escape.... For fantasy readers often eager to get lost in mystical worlds and escape the complications of real life, Piranesi’s predicament deeply resonates." (Time, Books of the Year)

Confused by my delight

Piranesi was utterly gripping. We had 20 minutes left of the book after a 3-hour drive home and found ourselves sitting in the car in the driveway, riveted. It would have taken less than a minute to go inside and listen in comfort but we didn’t want to break the narrative.
Still, but I’m really not clear why I like it so much. The usual attractions — compelling plot and characters — don’t really apply here. But two days later, my mind is still worrying at the book the way my fingers worry a pebble in my pocket.

An intriguing tale

(no spoilers)

It took me a while to connect and like the main character. By the halfway mark I felt much more attached to them and even found myself conflicted about what I thought he should do or feel which was really interesting. I think I enjoyed witnessing their development the most. if you enjoy peering into the psychology of characters, you'll enjoy this.

The setting itself is fascinating and I loved the way its mysteries unravel as the story progresses. If you like strange and weird worlds (I don't want to say fantasy, because it's not really a fantasy setting), you might enjoy this.

I wish the pacing of the first half of the book was more exciting though I was definitely intrigued enough to make it halfway and then I was hooked.

The Narrator puts emotion and energy into the reading making it very enjoyable.

Predictable

After the author's previous book, I expected something spectacular. Yet I found that although the world is absorbing and intriguing, the story is disappointingly predictable.

Captivating Storytelling

A tale to make you believe in mysteries like the wonder of childhood. Moving from a whimsical scene setting introduction that I couldn't get enough of, to a deeper mystery that bridges worlds, the book was my go to entertainment until it was done. Susanna Clark is a supreme fairytale writer for novel-loving adultz. I would compare Piranesi to a tale combining elements of Neil Gaiman and Guy Gavriel Kay.

Are we all reviewing the same book?

I have tried to like this as much as I enjoyed Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell and as much as other reviewers but I cannot follow what the book is about ! The reader is great - very clear, but the story has no obvious thread that I can understand. Maybe it will get better, but two hours in and it seems like a bad book investment for me.

Hard to believe that I would consider returning a (rare) book by Susanna Clarke but unless it starts to make sense ... goodbye Piranesi.

All these halls and vestibules!

The performance carried me through when the story couldn’t. The performance got me to take back this book from the DNF drawer when the book really deserved it. All these halls and vestibules! It was too much! The story was at least 2 hours too long. The end was really interesting- and honestly, more about that could have been nice. So much time was wasted on the beginning that I can’t give it more than 1 star and that’s a credit to the end of the book. But it’s definitely 5 stars for to the narration- for being enchanting enough to get me to push through the first four largely wasted hours and for being so enchanting in the end when the story actually picks up.

Gloriously mysterious and gripping!

It was easy for me to binge listen to this audiobook. From Chiwetel Ejiofor's incredible performance to Clarke's ability to drop you into the world of this story with ease and poetic elegance. I hung onto every word, every moment, every shred of information. Written beautifully in a manner that keeps you guessing and wanting more, Clarke is a talented writer that will inspire you to desire the thrill of being lost within the unknown.
