Description

Kiera Van Gelder's first suicide attempt at the age of 12 marked the onset of her struggles with drug addiction, depression, post-traumatic stress, self-harm, and chaotic romantic relationships - all of which eventually led to doctors' belated diagnosis of borderline personality disorder 20 years later.

The Buddha and the Borderline is a window into this mysterious and debilitating condition, an unblinking portrayal of one woman's fight against the emotional devastation of borderline personality disorder. This haunting, intimate memoir chronicles both the devastating period that led to Kiera's eventual diagnosis and her inspirational recovery through therapy, Buddhist spirituality, and a few online dates gone wrong. Kiera's story sheds light on the private struggle to transform suffering into compassion for herself and others, and is essential listening for all seeking to understand what it truly means to recover and reclaim the desire to live.

Interesting and insightful

My sister asked me to read this book because she has BPD (although she has not been officially diagnosed and does not have it to the degree of the author). Nonetheless it was helpful to understand the disorder and how it affects ones life, and the lives of those around her. I also I found it insightful for my job as a social worker. An honest , eye-opening and endearing memoir. #Audible1

for those living with BPD looking for answers

Most books on Borderline Personality Disorder are boring; they usually pump out the same marker traits in a different anecdotal way but leave you with a bleak outlook on your future. However, the way Kiera tells her story makes her more relatable than the character examples given in ‘I Hate You, Don’t Leave Me’ and her words are easy to digest in audio form. I found myself agreeing along with her analogies, pop culture references with her parts and her desires to be well emotionally. This is a great memoir to check out for those recently diagnosed, those looking to understand different therapy approaches to BPD and how to improve relationships with family, friends and loved ones.

Clarity for a parent

As the parent of a 14 year old with BPD. Kiera gave me a clear picture of whats going on inside my daughter and the hope DBT therapy may help! As well its opened my eyes on how to listen in a different way. Fingers crossed for my daughter and for Kiera.

Thank you Kiera my heart is with you as well.

useful book

So much useful information in the first three quarters of the book. The last bit goes way off track.

The Path to Order in Life

Lots of questions to start off. Through the book most were answered, all but the ones I need to ask myself. Is living with serenity and being translucent to myself worth it? My recommendation read this book. You’ll possibly learn what the read experienced and be able to identify your own answered to the issues you have or someone you know are dealing with.

Meh

Some times I just wanted to slap the author, I deal with the same stuff she does and I felt a lot of her comments were VAST over simplifications.

Informative but repetitive

Until listening to this book, I was convinced that my mother had BPD. Now I know that is not the case. Kira is a good writer, but I got tired of listening to her problems while at the same time, feeling sorry for her. I don’t recommend this book to anyone except those who think they might have BPD or are involved with someone who has the disorder. Also, the book reinforced my belief that people who gravitate to Buddhism are often very screwed up. (That view is based on personal experience.)
