Description

Like most people, you probably wake up, get hungry for meals and doze off in bed around the same time every day. If you've ever experienced jet lag or pulled an all-nighter, you know that this schedule can easily be thrown off kilter. But for some people, that imbalance or difficulty sleeping at night, hunger at odd times, or sudden fatigue at noon is a constant. If you're one of those people, Dr. Satchin Panda, one of the leading researchers on circadian rhythms, has a plan to reset your body clock.

Beginning with an in-depth explanation of the circadian clock - why it's important, how it works, and how to know it isn't working - The Circadian Code outlines lifestyle changes to make to get back on track. It's a concrete plan to enhance weight loss, improve sleep, optimize exercise, and manage technology so that it doesn't interfere with your body's natural rhythm. Dr. Panda's life changing methods show you how to prevent and reverse ailments like diabetes, cancer, and dementia, as well as microbiome conditions like acid reflux, heartburn, and irritable bowel disease.

Interesting content, terrible narration.

incredibly annoying voice...drags out the end of each sentence a few milliseconds too long. no passion...could be computer generated. ruins the book. would have been much better if the author read it. sounds weird to have a western voice read about life as a child in India. won't bother finishing.

Whys & hows of switching from night owl to lark

Or more precisely, harmonizing one's schedule to the solar rhythm and limiting eating to specific duration (8-12 hour period).

Content (overall): Actionable. It purports to provide key information in a practical program. Because regularizing my sleep schedule is something that I need to do after 38 years of not doing so, the goal of this book is perfect for my needs. But I think of this book as an adjunct to the app affiliated to Salk Institute which is monitoring my attempt to do Supported by scientific studies. I think the book is a better chouce (refetences) so I will get the Kindle if available. I just wanted something to listen to on my daily walks in mid-day sun.

Writing (story): The grammar is correct, the vocabulary understandable. He doesn't ramble. The author is a scientist writing a non-fiction book.

Narration (perfornance): Nasal, strange intonation - from Ohio? Doesn't matter what speed I play it at, he sounds weird to me.

Weaknesses: Only one - paddedness. Here is what I picture happened over the phone

Publisher: Dr. Panda we need X more pages.
Doctor: I have already said what needs to be said. It could be half the length, even a third and accomplish the same goal.
Publisher: We have rules. The book has to be between A and B pages.
Doctor: What do you expect me to do?
Publisher: Add some diet advice?
Doctor: But this isn't a diet book.
Publisher: We need C more page
Doctor: OK, but I think it will detract from the message of the book - that in addition to when one sleeps, it's less important what you eat than when.
Publisher: Do what you can...

2 weeks later...

Publisher: We got the additions, chapter six
Doctor: Good
Publisher: Ah, actually we are two pages short.
Doctor: mhmm..
Publisher: We have rules.
Doctor: Sorry, there is nothong more I can do.
Publisher: How about we go through the dictionary and list every healthy food that you recommend?
Doctor: (silence)
Publisher: We'll do it for you. All you have to do is approve or edit the list.
Doctor: (click)

note: I am only half way through the book.

Poor narration of a great book

I started reading the Circadian Code on Kindle. It's superbly written, making some very complex circadian science easy to understand and interesting. So I got the Audible version so that I could listen to it. Unfortunately the narrator gives this a cold read that loses the liveliness of the book. You almost feel like the narrator doesn't really like the book. Really unfortunate. After listening to a chapter of it I stopped listening and won't go back to the Audible edition. Best to read it myself.

READ THIS BOOK FOR BETTER HEALTH

Reading this book will improve your life! For the past 100 years we have been focused on what to eat and what to do for better health. And especially in the past 30 years we (Americans in particular) have gotten sicker.

Sure our lifespans have increased, although I head the 2018 is likely to mark the first time in American history where the average lifespan has decreased 3 straight years, but what about health span.

One does not need to run a double blind controlled experiment to see that Americans are fatter and sicker at an earlier age than at anytime in recent memory.

I believe a large reason is that we got WHAT we should eat very wrong. But that is a topic for another review on another book (like What the Heck Should I eat by Dr. Mark Hyman.)

If you eat a Vegan, Paleo, Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) or are totally confused about what a healthy diet looks like and just want to enjoy what you eat, following Dr. Panda's advice of WHEN to eat, exercise and sleep will improve your health and life

It all makes sense now

I loved this audio book. It gives me hope ! I have suffered for years with a broken sleep pattern . Never imaging that TRE could help . I am a 57 year old female and am about 50lbs over weight. I have tried many diets over the years as well as the Keto diet and fasting . I have lost the same 20 to 30 lens many times never quite reaching my goal and always gaining a little more back . I think my lack of sleep has been by biggest obstacle. If I could sleep I think my whole life would be different.

I couldn’t stop listening...

If you want to change your life without a lot of effort, this book is for you. If you don’t like the narrator, don’t let that stop you from listening. The content is that good.

False promises?

Ok - I am sure circadian rythms are real and I am sure they are important for health. I also believe that disrupting your circadian rythm can lead to negative health consequences. However, it feels like this book is trying to tie just about every health issue to circadian disruption and supports fads that do not otherwise have a lot of scientific backing at this time.

Good information

I enjoyed the information provided in the book but had a hard time getting past the narrator’s voice. I thought that I was experiencing one of those bad driving safety films from high school.
