À propos de cet audio

Told in emails, text messages, and essays, this unputdownable mystery follows a group of students in an art master’s program that goes dangerously awry, from the internationally bestselling “new queen of crime” (Electric Literature) Janice Hallett.

Gela Nathaniel, head of Royal Hastings University’s new Multimedia Art course, must find six students from all walks of life across the United Kingdom for her new master’s program before the university cuts her funding. The students are nothing but trouble from day one.

There’s Jem, a talented sculptor recently graduated from her university program and eager to make her mark as an artist at any cost. Jonathan, who has little experience aside from running his family’s gallery. Patrick manages an art supply store, but can barely operate his phone, much less design software. Ludya is a single mother and graphic designer more interested in a paycheck than homework. Cameron is a marketing executive in search of a hobby or a career change. And Alyson, already a successful artist, seems to be overqualified.

When the examiner, the man hired to grade students’ final works sifts through the students’ final essays, texts, and message boards, he becomes convinced that someone is in danger…or already dead.

With her trademark “witty, original” (The New York Times) voice, Janice Hallett weaves a fresh and mind-bending page-turner that will keep you guessing until the final page.

Ce que les critiques en disent

"An ensemble of six narrators narrates this twisty British thriller, which follows six art students who are enrolled in a nontraditional graduate program. Eager to impress the university, their instructor secures a year-long collaboration with a local tech company as part of the curriculum, but when a student disappears after an off-site excursion, the group struggles to work together under tense circumstances. As the story unfolds through emails, texts, reports, and messages from the course examiner, the narrators capture each character’s distinct personality, which makes the format easier to follow. Anushka Chakravarti and Brendan Dempsey are particularly great as Jem and Patrick, respectively, who form a tenuous friendship. The disastrous end-of-year gala keeps listeners engaged to the very end."

I have loved all of Hallett's other novels, but this was an absolute dud. I could barely get through this - it took me months to even get motivated enough to put the audiobook back on after I was about 30% through. None of the characters were all that compelling and the overall story didn't seem to be going anywhere. Once I picked it back up it did not get any better. One of the things I love about this author is her use of modern forms of communication as evidence and to tell complex mysteries in a fresh approach to epilistory novels that feels unique. But the choice of a university course learning platform did not make any logical sense. At least as the main source -- and I think she realized it about 80% through because suddenly she added Whatsapp messages to get more narrative information.
It seemed laughably illogical that some of the things that were written by the characters would ever be written into a student online journal for a course. One student thinks crime might have been committed and she writes a class journal about it??? That makes NO sense. Like these characters start confessing their entire life stories to their teacher for what??
The other thing that really bothered me was one of the "twists" near the end of the story is one of the students has a disability. As if it's a "you wouldn't know until you go back and pay attention." This felt a bit exploitative, and also again, illogical. After 8 months the professor never once asked the student about accommodation or accessibility needs (especially via the learning communication platform??)
Overall it tried to tell way too much and too far fetched a story for the platform and primary communication methods she attempted to use.

Great full cast performance for bad story
