I really enjoyed this book. It was suspensefull with some lighter parts. No gushing love story, just a "I'll listen to just another chapter" kind of book.

Chicago Homicide Detective Sam Porter is grieving the murder of his wife, when he’s called back into action: the Four Monkey Killer has been found dead of apparent suicide. As Porter’s crack squad attempts to rescue the infamous serial killer’s final victim, Porter accesses a diary our dead villain had on his person; and it introduces us to a childhood of mayhem that is candidly shocking.

Edoardo Ballerini is one of my favourite narrators for Audible (check out his work on Koontz’ “Nameless” series), and he does a great job with this one. And Graham Winston, as the voice of the diary excerpts, really drives home the insanity our killer was introduced to as an impressionable young boy.

Mixing dark humour with darker thrills, this taut and exciting police procedural is an unholy combination of Se7en meets Silence Of The Lambs meets The Usual Suspects, with a liberal dose of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to add some levity to the gruesome chaos. A brilliant mystery with an exciting end that definitely leaves you wanting more from this cast of characters. Amazing!

The Fourth Monkey, written by J.D. Barker and narrated by Edoardo Ballerini and Graham Winton, was very compelling to me. It was fast-paced with a satisfying ending - making me want more. So onward I go to the sequel, The Fifth to Die.

I always enjoy Eduardo Ballerini's narration and chose this book specifically because of him. so glad I did as the story was fantastic

I wanted to stop listening to this novel. It’s extremely gruesome story, had my stomach turning at times. However, the book intrigued me from beginning to in. It captured my attention, wanting to know how the story would unfold and end.
Loved the narrative and the ending was sweet justice.
Can’t wait to read more, with hopes that the blood, guts and gore might be reduced.

There were a few bad reviews for this book that truly had me worried that I would be wasting my time, but nope, I enjoyed it. It had a few predictable twists, and a few unpredictable twists, which kept me interested till the end. It was like watching a show where in one part you know what is going to happen next, and another part where you are surprised.

The ending. Though I typically don't like books that continue into another book, I found that a necessary evil for this book so things weren't rushed at the end.

Is it wrong that I was rooting for the killer? I did think it would have been better if the people he killed were the corrupt individuals, but for the story, his choice of victim made sense.

I will likely continue reading this series and recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a thriller that's just a thriller. No psychological crazy person acting stupid where we have to ensure nonsensical thoughts. No romance that overshadows the hunt for the killer. No stupid detectives that are too hung up on their own personal cr*p and do a sh*t job. No pages upon pages of fluff that amount to nothing. Very enjoyable read.

The story was a little too contrived for my taste. Predictable the whole way through. Excellent voice acting, though.
