Description

A group of friends reunite after one of them has returned from a mysterious two-year disappearance in this edgy and haunting debut.

Julie is missing, and no one believes she will ever return - except Elise. Elise knows Julie better than anyone, and feels it in her bones that her best friend is out there and that one day Julie will come back. She’s right. Two years to the day that Julie went missing, she reappears with no memory of where she’s been or what happened to her.

Along with Molly and Mae, their two close friends from college, the women decide to reunite at a remote inn. But the second Elise sees Julie, she knows something is wrong - she’s emaciated, with sallow skin and odd appetites. And as the weekend unfurls, it becomes impossible to deny that the Julie who vanished two years ago is not the same Julie who came back. But then who - or what - is she?

Decent

Nothing overly amazing here, but still a worthwhile listen. I mean, I finished it, but it didn't blow me away or anything. I didn't find the characters' voices annoying, like some reviewers have said, but I didn't think the narration was especially great, either. Overall, a decent listen.

An ok telling of a vampire of sorts

Not really sure what the antagonistic elements are, skin walkers? Vamps? Intelligent undead? But it was a fun read a lot of things didn’t make any sense but it’s forgivable due to the nature of the characters at the hotel. Although some things are just unbelievably nonsensical. As the main character Many times I’d say “well fuck this I’m leaving” or “if you don’t tell me what’s going on I’m leaving” it’s like all the characters are caught in a cycle of avoiding sparking the others feelings to forgo even their own safety. Kinda silly but maybe that’s just the nature of this group of women. I liked it not amazing.

a whole different kind of creature feature!

Elise, Molly, and Mae are reunited with their friend Julie when she reappears after a 2 year disappearance. They are shocked but thrilled to have their best friend back. But not all is as it seems and their reunion quickly turns into a nightmare.
I listened to the audibook and the narrator, Sarah Scott, does a fantastic job bringing Elise and her besties to life.
The fast paced plot and unique monster kept me on the edge of my seat the entirety of the book. The way Rachel Harrison describes that creature will definitely make me think twice before venturing into the woods on my own. It's not all horror and gore though.
There's humor and hope as well and it wouldn't be a Rachel Harrison book without a theme of friendship, personal growth, and girl power! The women are relatable in their bonds and their unique personalities that only strengthen those bonds.
This was my 3rd Rachel Harrison book and I am once again not disappointed!

Effective Creepiness

Molly. May. Elise. Louise. This book does a great job establishing realistic girlfriends, and then drops them into a horrific scenario - one of them disappearing for two years and returning "different".. and then the fun begins.
Being a male, I can't completely immerse myself in the relationships, but Rachel Harrison does a masterful job crafting a totally believable matrix around which to build a horror story. Despite some issues with pacing, the majority of the book is well-crafted, clever, and (indispensable for a good scare) populated with flawed, relatable characters. There are a few somewhat annoying colloquiallisms in the text, but generally the writing is creditable, dialogue is true-to-life, atmosphere is palpable, and descriptions are chilling.
Disappointingly, the story descends into the headshakingly silly when the Disappeared (Julie) finally gives her story - and the climax reveals the protagonist (Elise) to be a clichéd "should-have-left-yesterday" absolute IDIOT - but I was still captivated.

The narration by Sarah Scott is great for this book - her diction/timbre/cadence are professional, and her tone is suitably emotive (portraying fear nicely.. albeit not perfectly). I played the book at 1.10X to make up for slightly slow pacing, but I would listen to Scott again any day. She was a good choice for reader by Penguin Audio.

This audiobook is imperfect, but good for some satisfying chills. 'The Return' merits 6.5 stars out of 10 for fans of suspense/horror.
