Maisie Dobbs got her start as a maid in an aristocratic London household when she was thirteen. Her employer, suffragette Lady Rowan Compton, soon became her patron, taking the remarkably bright youngster under her wing. Lady Rowan’s friend, Maurice Blanche, often retained as an investigator by the European elite, recognized Maisie’s intuitive gifts. The outbreak of war changed everything. Ten years after the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie sets out on her own as a private investigator, one who has learned that coincidences are meaningful, and truth elusive.

Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her work as a librarian in Maine. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured salesman whose job took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger.

The novel reintroduces readers to the enigmatic detective, Daniel Hawthorne, whose sharp mind and unconventional methods make him an intriguing character from the outset. Horowitz's ability to breathe life into his characters is nothing short of remarkable, and Hawthorne's complex personality adds depth to the story. As the narrator, Horowitz continues to play a vital role in the plot, offering readers a unique perspective that enhances the overall reading experience.
One of the standout features of "The Sentence Is Death" is its ingenious plot. Horowitz weaves a web of mystery that is as intricate as it is unpredictable. The novel effortlessly keeps readers on the edge of their seats, as the investigation unfolds with unexpected twists and turns. The author's ability to seamlessly integrate real-life events into the narrative further blurs the lines between fiction and reality, adding an extra layer of intrigue.
Horowitz's writing remains both accessible and engaging, making it easy for readers to immerse themselves in the story. The dialogue is sharp, and the pacing is spot-on, ensuring that the suspense builds steadily throughout the novel. The humor, a signature element of Horowitz's style, is present in abundance, providing moments of levity that complement the darker undertones of the mystery.
The supporting cast of characters in "The Sentence Is Death" is equally well-developed, each playing a crucial role in the unfolding drama. The chemistry between Hawthorne and the author deepens, offering readers a dynamic and entertaining partnership that enhances the narrative.
In conclusion, "The Sentence Is Death" is a triumphant continuation of Anthony Horowitz's foray into the world of literary mysteries. With its compelling characters, clever plot twists, and a perfect blend of humor and suspense, this novel is a testament to the author's storytelling prowess. Fans of detective fiction and those who enjoyed the first installment will find themselves thoroughly engrossed in this captivating sequel. Anthony Horowitz once again proves why he is a standout figure in the genre, leaving readers eagerly anticipating his next literary endeavor.

Loved it

I haven't finished the book. the story is interesting enough to make me want to finish. But I can't believe the production team was okay with the voice choice for some of the main characters. Sure, they may not be the most likable characters, but the narration voices for them are like nails on chalkboard, almost unbearable.
I guess it speaks for the story-line that I'm willing to suffer through, and finish the book.
Narrator used horrible voice for some characters

So Fun

But - the narrator does a completely awful job on the female voices. So bad it’s hard to hear the dialogue as it’s meant to be.
If the story line was any weaker I would have quit listening
Great story - but I didn’t think the narrator was much good
