Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig. 

It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview - to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right? 

I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they...offered me the job? 

It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I'm exactly the kind of takes-no-sh-t bartender this guild needs, or there's a good reason no one else wants to work here. 

So what's a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course - with a pay raise.

The purpose of this first book was primarily to introduce the setting and relevant characters. The plot was not the most elaborate, but it was straightforward and engaging. The fast pace and humor make it easier to quickly get into the story, and fly through it in a day or two.

The magic system is simple, but large and varied at the same time. There are five main classes of mythics (people with magic): Spiritalis (witches), Psychica (mental gifts), Arcana (sorcerers, healers, and alchemists), Demonica (summoning and controlling demons), and Elementaria (elemental mages). Mythics have to be part of a guild, and they are ruled by their own police, the MPD. As I said, pretty basic urban fantasy world-building, but the wide range of magical abilities made it pretty cool.

Tori is a strong-willed and feisty main character. She has a temper and struggles to keep it in check when people annoy her or customers are rude to her, making it hard for her to hold on to a job for more than a few weeks. She does not have much character growth in this book, because she remains a feisty and at times rude gal, but she gains friends and confidence in this first instalment, and it’s easy to see how she will thrive and blossom with the Guild. There is a beginning of “found family” vibe here, and I love it!

Being the only human around all those mythics, it would be easy for her to be pushed around, or to become the damsel in distress as soon as there is a problem, but Tori showed them all that she could take care of herself. She is not one to back down from a fight, and it didn’t seem to register at first how overpowered she was by all those mythics. By the time she realized it, she had already decided that she wanted to stay with them and keep her job, despite the dangers that came with it. I also appreciate that the mythics were humble enough to acknowledge that Tori could be useful, and saved their asses a time or two, even.

Tori is 100% human, remains 100% human, and I love it this way. She started as a human accidentally stumbling into the mythics’ world, and I love how she just took everything in and decided that it was still cooler than the jobs she had before, so she was fine with it. I was dreading the moment when she would realize that she had hidden powers, or was a unique type of mythic, but thankfully, she remained 100% human. Hopefully, she will remain this way, because I love how it shows that she does not need to be a mythic to be strong and brave, and it also shows every mythic around her that humans are not as weak as they might think.

The three mages Tori meets are funny and kind, but I do hope they will gain more depth in the next books. Aaron is the one who makes jokes, Ezra is the broody and mysterious one, and Kai is the balance between them. It works, and I like the three guys, but I do not love them yet. I need them to show more layers and complexity for that to happen. For now, even though Aaron is the one who takes up more room in the book, with his interaction with Tori as well as with his flamboyant personality, I do have a soft spot for quiet Ezra, and I hope to see more of him in the next book.

This is going to be a slow, slow burn. I am not even sure who the love interest will be. This book makes us think that it might be Aaron, but I have my doubts. While they are cute together and have good chemistry as friends, I don’t think they would make a great couple. I even had to look up if this series is a reverse harem, because I couldn’t figure out who Tori would end up with. I am not complaining that this is a slow burn at all, but I am used to knowing right away who the endgame is in those types of urban fantasy fast-paced series. That being said, I think this could have made a great urban fantasy reverse harem series, too.

I know this world combines 4 different series, and I did my research before starting this book. I will continue with this universe for sure, starting Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors right away, and I hope to enjoy that series as much as I enjoyed Three Mages and a Margarita!

I have listened to many Books in this Genre and this is by far the best one I have heard in quite a while.
I enjoyed the unique Storyline , The narrator kept me listening and picturing everything perfectly. If you are a fan of modern day story’s about the supernatural being a hidden part of Society. With Enticing Characters whom you actually Visualize as the Author describes them so Well, And most importantly a interesting New story line that makes you excited to see where this story will go with the Next Book. Than I suggest giving this book a try.
I can’t wait to listen to the Next book in this series.

Loved it! The plot is very intriguing and the character development is natural. I also love how it is set in Vancouver. Need to read the next book.

this was the first book that got me to like aduiobooks because Chris Dukehart does really well with the narration she isn't monotone like a lot of the samples I've listened to on other books. She does very good with having different voices for the characters. I also love the story Ezra is deffently my favorite character Tori is pretty badass.

Loved the take on the plot. Refreshingly different storyline. Loved Tori and her attitude! Voice actress was amazing too. Onto book 2 for me!
