Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

In this culmination of his life’s work, Peter A. Levine draws on his broad experience as a clinician, a student of comparative brain research, a stress scientist and a keen observer of the naturalistic animal world to explain the nature and transformation of trauma in the body, brain and psyche. In an Unspoken Voice is based on the idea that trauma is neither a disease nor a disorder, but rather an injury caused by fright, helplessness and loss that can be healed by engaging our innate capacity to self-regulate high states of arousal and intense emotions.

Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Maté explore the phenomenon of peer orientation: the troubling tendency of children and youth to look to their peers for direction—for a sense of right and wrong, for values, identity and codes of behavior. But peer orientation undermines family cohesion, poisons the school atmosphere, and fosters an aggressively hostile and sexualized youth culture. It provides a powerful explanation for schoolyard bullying and youth violence; it is an escalating trend that has never been adequately described or contested until Hold On to Your Kids.

In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Alan Gordon, a psychotherapist and the founder of the Pain Psychology Center in Los Angeles, was in grad school when he started experiencing chronic pain and it completely derailed his life. Ce que les critiques en disent
International Bestseller
“This book has many strengths. . . . When Maté witnesses and testifies to human suffering, including his own, he is compassionate and compelling.”—The Globe and Mail
“Written with clarity and compassion. . . . The book’s characteristics seem to describe Maté himself: armed with knowledge and straight from the heart.”—The Georgia Straight
“Maté carefully explains the biological mechanisms that are activated when stress and trauma exert a powerful influence on the body, and he backs up his claims with compelling evidence from the field. . . . Both the lay and specialist reader will be grateful for the final chapter, ‘The Seven A’s of Healing,’ in which Maté presents an open formula for healing and the prevention of illness resulting from hidden stress.”—Quill & Quire

Brilliant book. A must read.
Love Gabor Maté’s work. This book is no exception. Everyone who is a parent or care giver should read this. Every medical student and medical professional should read this. I bet they don’t teach this knowledge in medical school, which is why and what makes Gabor’s work so brilliant and so very needed in our times and world. It is not a book just for those who are ill and seeking healing. It is for everyone who cares about their health, and those of their children and loved ones. I learned so much about myself, my behaviours and emotions, and all the ways my body is saying no to me by reading this book. Thank you Gabor Maté, for the wisdom you bring to the world through your work.

Life Changing & Brilliant!
This was probably the best book I’ve read in years! Very eye opening and alarming at the same time. It really makes us think of how things are connected and how the way we manage our stress can affect our overall wellbeing and health. The case studies and experiences presented in each chapter are relatable and timely. SO grateful to back came across this book!

It's OK to say no before your body does.
The author brings experience as a doctor and as a researcher together into an insightful work on how our bodies can react when our minds say yes, whether out of guilt, shame, a sense of obligation, or a number of other reasons.
