One night a stranger wrapped in bandages and eccentric clothing arrives in an English village. The Time Machine is a post-apocalyptic science fiction novella by H. G. Wells, published in 1895. One of the most renowned works of science fiction, The Time Machine reflects on the adventures of The Time Traveller-a man who constructs a machine which allows him to explore what the future has to offer. The novel is the story of a scientist who, through the study of optics finds a way to make things invisible. In a desire for recognition, fame, and the advantages of being invisible, he subjects himself to the process. But being unseen isn't as positive as he had hoped, and he soon finds himself regretting his condition, and his mind also becomes warped. He becomes mentally unhinged. Later, he embraces his invisibility and begins to spiral into a lust for power and control, and he reveals a plan he has hatched to unleash his personal "terror" on the world.

This 1911 collection of thirty-three stories, selected and revised by the author from amongst his huge output of short fiction, includes tales of comedy, horror, monsters, and strange worlds. In his Introduction, Wells writes that the book brings together, “All the short stories by me that I care for any one to read again,” and that, “No short story of mine of the slightest merit is excluded from this volume.”
