With a second chance ahead of them and the moonshiner’s compound in the rearview mirror, Ben and his crew can resume their cross-country trek to Colorado. Or can they? Three newly rescued acquaintances and another canine companion complicate their life on the road. And the addition of two more vehicles to their west bound convoy only adds to Ben’s responsibilities. Making matters worse, the open road quickly proves more hostile than they remember.

Deep in the icy black of the North Atlantic, a state-of-the-art submersible makes a chilling discovery—a metallic object slicing through the water with impossible speed and precision. Moments later, systems fail, lights die, and terror takes hold. On Mars, a European rover transmits the image of a stone—etched with unknown symbols—just before vanishing from the data grid. Entire neighborhoods in Nevada disappear without a trace. And in the French Alps, a champion cyclist vanishes mid-race, his GPS pinging him thousands of miles away—then gone.

After an exchange student with bubonic plague turns up in a Reno hospital, a contractor with identical symptoms dies in Los Angeles. The government‘s official stance is that the cases are isolated and the outbreak is under control. But George Mack, a 30-year public health veteran, quickly realizes this is no ordinary plague. The death toll is too high, and the spread pattern make no sense. As Reno’s hospitals fill with victims, Mack begins to believe that there is more to the epidemic than the CDC is letting on - and that he must take drastic steps if he hopes to save his city.

Things go from bad to worse for Ben and his crew as they struggle to push on toward Colorado. Unfortunately, due to Emma’s deteriorating health, they’re forced to alter their plans.
