Deze thema's spelen in bepaalde perioden een centrale rol in de Europese literatuur, maar zij kennen ook een voorgeschiedenis en een nawerking. Zo schakelt Joep Leerssen bij een thema als natuurgevoel moeiteloos over van de Romantiek terug naar de Klassieke Oudheid en door naar de jaren zestig van de 20ste eeuw.

Muziek is een kunstvorm die een verhaal vertelt, maar wat horen we als we naar klassieke muziek luisteren? Leo Samama behandelt in dit chronologisch opgebouwde college de belangrijkste kenmerken en bouwstenen van de westerse muziekkunst. Met aandacht voor klankkleur, vorm en karakter van zowel instrumenten en als van composities.

In dit acht uur durende hoorcollege neemt Leo Samama de luisteraar mee door de geschiedenis van de westerse klassieke muziek. Beginnend bij de kunstuitingen van de troubadours in Frankrijk tot de moderne composities van de 20e eeuwse componisten. Daarnaast komen de belangrijkste periodes aan bod waaronder de barok, de Weense Klassieken, de romantiek en de 20e eeuw.

In deze reeks hoorcolleges behandelt Anthonya Visser belangrijke Duitstalige schrijvers van de 18e tot en met de 21e eeuw. Teksten van Goethe, Heine, Kafka en anderen worden belicht vanuit literatuurhistorisch perspectief, waarbij vormaspecten vanzelfsprekend ook aan bod komen. Visser gaat eveneens in op de fascinerende politiek-culturele context waarin deze literatuur tot stand is gekomen.

Literatuur in de 19e eeuw was geen vrijblijvend vermaak. Schrijvers wilden de maatschappij verbeteren door aandacht voor sociale problemen, maar ook door aansluiting te zoeken bij internationale kunstbewegingen. Literatuur als middelaar tussen ideaal en werkelijkheid. Rond 1880 keren nieuwe jonge schrijvers zich tegen deze generatie en literatuur wordt weer iets voor een kleine groep geestverwanten.

Muziek speelt in vrijwel ons hele leven een grote rol: van wiegeliedjes in de babykamer, het draaiorgel op straat, tot muziek op de Ipod en in de kerk. We kunnen niet zonder. Muziek definieert ons als mensen, geeft ons mede een identiteit. Meer dan welke andere vorm van kunst kan muziek ons ook fysiek raken, met de directheid en de kracht van een zuivere klank. Tegelijk is muziek abstracter dan menig andere uiting van de mens. Aan de hand van filosofische gedachten over muziek, vraagt Leo Samama zich af welke rol muziek speelt in het leven van de mens, toen en nu.

In dit multidisciplinaire college kijkt Kitty Zijlmans naar de vele aspecten van kunstgeschiedenis, waaronder esthetica en kunstkritiek. Maar ook naar de rol van de kunst in de maatschappij en de veranderingen daarin als gevolg van de opkomst van moderne kunst en de mondialisering.

Aan de basis van de canon van de Europese cultuur liggen de grote teksten en mythen uit de Griekse Oudheid: de klassiekste klassiekers. Ineke Sluiter behandelt in haar colleges de beroemde teksten waarin thema's als wrok, roem, list, schuld en zelfkennis voor het eerst in de wereldliteratuur opduiken. Zij kijkt daarbij speciaal naar het wereldbeeld en de waardesystemen die uit deze teksten spreken.
