Few philosophers have so extensively influenced thought and language as Aristotle. His conception of the universe pervades Christian theology. Meno is a Socratic dialogue written by Plato. Meno begins the dialogue by asking Socrates whether virtue is taught, acquired by practice, or comes by nature. In order to determine whether virtue is teachable or not, Socrates tells Meno that they first need to determine what virtue is. When the characters speak of virtue, or rather arete, they refer to virtue in general, rather than particular virtues, such as justice or temperance.

The Charmides is a dialogue of Plato, in which Socrates engages a handsome and popular boy named Charmides in a conversation about the meaning of sophrosyne, a Greek word usually translated into English as "temperance," "self-control," or "restraint." When the boy is unable to satisfy him with an answer, he next turns to the boy's mentor Critias. In the dialogue, Charmides and then later Critias champion that Temperance is "doing one's own work" but Socrates derides this as vague.

Apology is a philosophical dialogue written by Plato, chronicling the trial of Socrates. In this work, Socrates defends himself against charges of corrupting the youth and impiety, ultimately leading to his conviction and execution. Despite his defense, Socrates remains steadfast in his commitment to truth and virtue, refusing to compromise his beliefs even in the face of death.

The collection consists of seven essays discussing various natural phenomena related to the body and soul. The culmination of Aristotle's "Parva Naturalia" is the definition of the stages of the life cycle, from the birth of a new living being to death.
