En mettant en scène son maître Socrate, Platon inaugure ce geste intellectuel primordial : s'interroger soi-même, pour mettre en évidence préjugés et erreurs, et comprendre ce qui fait véritablement la morale, la vie en société, la valeur d'une vie humaine. Sans cette interrogation honnête et lucide, il n'y aurait qu'à fonctionner mécaniquement, comme un robot qui ne sait pourquoi il avance.

Marcus Tullius Cicéron : un des plus grands orateurs n'ayant jamais existé. Ses talents d'avocat lui permirent d'accéder à la magistrature suprême, fonction normalement réservée à la noblesse ; et la seule énergie de ses discours, les "Catilinaires", suffit à déjouer une terrible conjuration qui visait à l'élimination d'une partie de l'élite politique. Cicéron connut la gloire à la suite de cette affaire, avant que sa franche opposition au pouvoir d'Antoine lui coûte la vie en 43 av. J-C. L'œuvre de Cicéron est considérée comme un modèle d'expression latine, et on lui doit la transmission d'une part importante de la pensée grecque.

Texte apocryphe probablement, ce "Manuel d'Epictète" est un discours sur les vertus du Philosophe en des termes très simples, qui s'appliquent en fait à tout humain. Sans doute un des premiers textes de développement personnel de l'Histoire, l'auteur y explicite les idées et les habitudes qu'une personne qui veut trouver la vérité doit rechercher en lui et en dehors, en véritable Stoïcien. Au XXème siècle encore, il influence fortement les philosophes par ses textes, comme par exemple Alain.

Crito is a dialogue that was written by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. It depicts a conversation between Socrates and his wealthy friend Crito of Alopece regarding justice, injustice, and the appropriate response to injustice after Socrates's imprisonment, which is chronicled in the Apology. In Crito, Socrates believes injustice may not be answered with injustice, personifies the Laws of Athens to prove this, and refuses Crito's offer to finance his escape from prison. The dialogue contains an ancient statement of the social contract theory of government.

Dating from the third century AD, Artemidorus’ The Interpretation of Dreams (Oneirocritica) is the only dream-book from Graeco-Roman antiquity that has survived intact. It represents the most influential pre-Freudian treatment of dreams and the theory of their interpretation. In the ancient world it was widely believed that some dreams had allegorical significance that, if correctly interpreted, offered insight into the future. Artemidorus makes a clear distinction between predictive and non-predictive dreams, setting out the general principle of interpretation.
