Serial killers are big business. While many people are familiar with the better known killers like John Wayne Gacy or Jack the Ripper, this is not the end of the story. There are so many examples of serial killers from around the world that many of them have simply been forgotten about.

The second volume of my series on serial killers will introduce you to women who committed serial killings. These evil women are every bit as cruel and ruthless as their male counterparts. I am going to introduce you to a few well-known killers such as Elizabeth Bathory, a.k.a. the Countess of Blood; Aileen Wuornos, the woman who inspired the film Monster; Leslie Van Houten, a woman who committed murder for Charles Manson; Jane Toppan, a nurse, who killed dozens of her patients; and Amelia Dyer, the baby farm murderer.

In 1975, after Manson Family member Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme’s attempt to kill President Gerald Ford, the FBI found a cache of letters in the would-be assassin’s Sacramento apartment. The return address belonged to future forensic psychologist Jeffrey Smalldon, then a young undergraduate. A decade later, after the shocking murders of two co-workers, Smalldon’s quest to understand the twisted minds and motivations of killers became personal in a way it never had been before.

When veteran LAPD homicide detective Steve Hodel discovered that his own late father, Dr. George Hill Hodel, was the killer in the infamous Black Dahlia murder case, he wrote the best seller Black Dahlia Avenger, a book that convinced even the L.A. County Deputy District Attorney that George Hodel was responsible for Elizabeth Short's gruesome death.

Audrey Marie Hilley was an escaped murderer who killed her husband and tried to kill her daughter with arsenic. Robert Charles Browne, a 68-year-old Louisiana native, who serves a double-life sentence at the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility may just be one of the most prolific murderers in American history. However, some of the self-professed serial killer’s uncorroborated claims leaves plenty of room for speculation about the cold cases that remain unsolved in the wake of his imprisonment.
