Born in West Africa in the early 1950s, Somé was kidnapped at age four by a French Jesuit missionary to be trained as a priest, for the next 15 years enduring the harsh regimen of a seminary where his native language and tribal traditions were systematically suppressed. At age 20 he escaped, but when he returned to his Dugara people in Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso) they rejected him as an outsider. To reconnect with his native culture, Somé underwent a month-long initiation into shamanism.

In July 1973, Bob Tininenko, his wife Linda, and his brother in-law Jim Fisher set sail from Tacoma, Washington, on a 31-foot trimaran, down the West Coast to Costa Rica. The journey was expected to take a matter of weeks, but 10 days into the cruise, the party encountered a freak storm off the coast of Northern California. When gale-force winds and 50-foot waves capsized their boat, the voyage became a nightmare. For 72 days, the trio was lost at sea. Humans are embedded in rhythms and frequencies that determine their lives: Day and night, waking and sleeping, the seasons, the breathing rhythm, the heartbeat frequency and hormonal rhythms that determine our biological clock. Nowadays, some of these rhythms have become confused, and the relationship between tension and relaxation is often no longer correct. Due to our modern world we often do not experience the seasons intensively enough, we often work against the inner bioryhthmic clock e.g. in shift work and have little time for harmonization and energy reflux.
