2015 年ごろから国内でもブームとなったフィンテックでは、数多くのスタートアップが誕生したほか、メガバンクや地銀、大手の証券・保険会社に加え、通信キャリアなども巻き込み、大きなトレンドとなった。
本書のテーマである「エンベッデッド・ファイナンス」は、日本語では「組み込み金融」、「埋め込み金融」、あるいは「モジュラー型金融」などと呼ばれ、「金融以外のサービス提供企業（非金融企業）が、既存サービスに金融サービスを組み込んで金融サービスを提供する」ことを意味する。
代表的なサービスとして、EC サイトが提供する「後払い（決済）」サービスなどが挙げられ、フィンテックの次の一大トレンドとして注目されつつある。エンベッデッド・ファイナンスに対する取り組みはフィンテック同様、欧米企業が進んでいるが、国内企業もメルカリ（メルペイ）の「ふえるお財布」（資産運用サービス）やファミリーマートによる消費者金融事業への参入など、動きが盛んになっており、2021 年以降、金融機関はもちろんのこと、小売・通信・サービス・航空・ＩＴといったさまざまな業界の企業を巻き込み、大きく進展していくと予想される。
