「無頼派」「新戯作派」の破滅型作家を代表する昭和初期の小説家、太宰治の短編小説。初出は「展望」［1947（昭和22）年］。泥酔状態で帰り、借金を作ってくる大谷を夫に持つ「私」が、大谷が泥棒を働いた椿屋で働くようになるという話。戦後の太宰文学を代表する作品のひとつで、太宰とイメージが重なる大谷と、妻の「私」の繊細な関係が見事に描かれている。
