髭野博士は実に不思議な男だった。

曰く、海軍で作っている一人乗り魚形水雷ボートが彼の発明である……
雑誌に彼の身の上話を書きたいという依頼に機嫌を良くした彼は、原稿料などいらないと言って、得意満面に昔話を始める。
どこまで本当のことかわからない彼の話は、十四の都市に感化院を抜け出したことから始まる。女郎屋で文無しがばれて大げんかになった時、中に入って止めた見世物師の親爺・木乃伊の鉄五郎に誘われて、一緒に軽業をやることになった。最初は上手くいっていたのだが、自然と騒動を招く性質なのか、事故のような出来事から鉄五郎が死んだ際に犯人扱いをされてしまう。警察に渡す前にかたき討ちをしてやるという、見世物師の仲間に取り囲まれながら応戦し、大暴れをする髭野。
その場に思いがけない仲裁が現れるのだが……

日本の小説家、SF作家、探偵小説家、幻想文学作家。
1889年（明治22年）1月4日 - 1936年（昭和11年）3月11日。
他の筆名に海若藍平、香倶土三鳥など。現在では、夢久、夢Qなどと呼ばれることもある。福岡県福岡市出身。日本探偵小説三大奇書の一つに数えられる畢生の奇書『ドグラ・マグラ』をはじめ、怪奇色と幻想性の色濃い作風で名高い。またホラー的な作品もある。
