Story
On January 14, 2018, a 17-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings - ranging in age from two to 29 - were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. "I've never been out," she stammered.

Story
Growing up in a deeply troubled family, 15-year-old Anna felt lost and alone in the world. So when a friendly taxi driver befriended her, Anna welcomed the attention, and agreed to go home with him to meet his family. She wouldn't escape for over a decade. Held captive by a sadistic pedophile, Anna was subjected to despicable levels of sexual abuse and torture. The unrelenting violence and degradation resulted in numerous miscarriages, and the birth of four babies.... each one stolen away from Anna at birth.

When Jade Kelly met her new foster mother, she thought her prayers had been answered. Kindly Carol Docherty was everything her violent, drug-addicted mother was not. Loving and nurturing, she fed and clothed 10-year-old Jade and offered a life free of fear from near constant abuse. Or so Jade thought. As soon as social workers in Lancashire stopped their regular checks on Jade’s progress, Carol turned. Over the next six years Jade and three other girls were effectively kept prisoner in a bedroom she called the ‘bad room’ and subjected to unrelenting physical and mental abuse.

Barbara was 12 when she was admitted to the psychiatric hospital Aston Hall in 1971. From a troubled home, she'd hoped she would find sanctuary there. But during her stay, Barbara was systematically drugged and abused by its head physician, Dr Kenneth Milner. Somehow, eventually, she started to campaign for answers. This is a shocking account of how vulnerable children were preyed upon by the doctor entrusted with their care.

From the outside, there was no reason to suspect the family life of young schoolchild Keri was anything but unremarkable. Two loving parents, a backdrop of 1960s Britain; life had provided for her, at least with the riches of modesty. Keri herself however, would often confound teachers with her erratic behaviour, which was at best sullen and withdrawn; at worst violently disruptive. When challenged, she would only exacerbate her growing reputation as a fantasist; weaving terrible tales about the "abuse" she was suffering at the hands of her very creators.

Peter Woodcock was Canada's youngest serial killer when, at the age of 17, he brutally raped and murdered two boys and a girl between the ages of four and nine. He was never put on trial by "reason of insanity", and instead was confined for 34 years in a criminal psychiatric facility and offered treatment. On July 13, 1991, he finally had earned his first day pass ever and was allowed to briefly go off the facility grounds into town to visit a DQ for an ice cream. What Woodcock did within the first hour of his first day pass stunned many people and made national headlines.

In this much-publicised third volume, Kat recounts her early-mid teen years; no longer a small child, but a girl on the cusp of adolescence. Still traumatized by her early experiences, but not entirely without that sense of vague hope that is the inalienable property of youth. Now at Duncroft Approved School for “emotionally disturbed girls”, her life had come to resemble that of a prisoner; a good day was a bad one and a bad day was horrific.

Captivating, bringing the listener to tears ...
I enjoyed this book although it brought out many different emotions! I would recommend it to everyone. Fear, angry, pity, sadness & even an overwhelming helplessness at times. Unimagineably feelings of dispair seeing what an older human being can do to a child. Natasha was so wise for her age and so strong willed; this is what I credit with saving her life...the will to live! May good things come to her, always.

Hauntingly courageous
It’s hard to say I “like” the account of someone who has been abducted (it’s such a heinous act), I appreciated Natascha’s story on a few fronts. One is that, despite her desire for privacy, she realized the only way for her story to be told truthfully was to do it herself. Another is that at a young age she set a milestone at which she would attempt to escape - and she did it. And the last was that she chose who much to reveal, and put boundaries around private details. I applaud her.

Interesting story..could be better
The story has all the earmarks of a great true crime read. Some parts had great potential, but it is told from a child's point of view for most of the book. I understand that is needed, but it became monotonous and repetitive which slowed down the read. I would have liked to have read more from her adult situation, and not have certain parts deliberately left out with the explanation of "privacy issues". The book is built up as being based on her whole Slavery experience....unfortunately, all you get is a weak apology as to why she does not want to tell the whole story! Big let down. I wish I would have done my research before listening to this, I would have been for warned of the author's predisposition to not trust media and how she tends to hide the whole story. I am sad she was so brutalized and that she lost her childhood, I don't want to sound heartless. I am just giving my honest opinion on how the story was presented.

Don't waste your time on this bore fest
Omg how could they screw up such an interesting story?? This story should have been gripping, and tantalizing! Instead it was boring and went off in other directions so frequently you almost forgot what the story was about! I didn't expect molestation or rape cause that would have been hard to listen to but I did want to hear about what exactly was going on for 10 years of being locked up. She's talking about fairy tales and how she wished she could be floating here, and floating there and what she would be doing if she were home etc etc, I hated this book terribly! I felt as if I was locked up and being tortured while listening to this snooze fest! The narrator was as boring and docile as the story and it drove me crazy! I couldn't even finish listening to it! If this was a movie you'd get up and walk out! Horrible don't waste your time this book isn't even worth $1.00 they should list it as free, and then you still wouldn't be able to drudge your way through it!!

Interesting, sad story. Terrible narration
The story was a very interesting and heart wrenching true story.
Unfortunately the narrator ruined the book. She made it very difficult to get through, and I had to put it on a faster speed. The narrator had awkwardly placed pauses, and was, most times, super slow, and other times, fast. She made the book very hard to listen to.

The narrative sucks
I found it hard to feel fully emerged and sorry for this girl due to the person reading the novel. She is so withdrawn and monotone that it really made it hard to connect with the story. I feel like a lot of the victims emotion of her story was lost, the narrator could have been explaining my dinner just as clearly as this poor girls captivity.

Terrible.
Don't waste a credit. While I empathize with what happened to this woman, I feel as tho she is not someone that I'd like much in real life. She sounds like a self centered whiner. Very "me-centric". Among other things. Ugh.
It was all I could do to get through it, but I did, simply for the fact that I loathe wasting a precious credit.
Skip it- unless you like listening to someone whine about every thing that's ever happened in her life, and then self psychoanalyze it to tears. Not sure if she became a therapist as an adult, but she sure sounds like one! There is much more "psychology" to this "book" than there is story. Won't recommend it to anyone I like!

amazing book
I enjoyed the book but if she was going to tell the story she should have told the whole story.

Too long, Too much navel gazing . . . .
I feel horrible for the author. I cannot remotely fathom what she experienced. However, the book could have been half as long for the little bit offered. Lots and lots of repetition. A whole lot of introspection and defensive attempts to explain herself, her feelings for her captor, and her actions after escaping his clutches. I haven't felt that way after reading accounts of other women in similar circumstances. I don't know why; something about the story just didn't draw me in. I kept listening, hoping it would happen.
