Publisher's Summary
Only one thing matters to Kai: getting the job done, and doing it better than anyone else.
But when a beautiful thief crashes his security gig, claiming she's trying to protect the valuable artifact he's guarding, all his careful plans go up in flames. He doesn't believe a word she says - until the item is stolen right out from under them.
Recovering the artifact before the real thief can unleash its ancient magic requires insider knowledge - information the mysterious trespasser possesses. Teaming up with a stranger isn't Kai's idea of smart, but he'll need all the help he can get to take on a notorious rogue and arcane power from the time of the gods.

Loved the book!
Annette Marie has out done her self again! I’ve never read a book yet by Annette Marie that I didn’t love, and this one doesn’t disappoint. It’s a side story, prequel to the events in the Guild Codex: Spellbound. if you like this one, check out the rest of the Guild Codex series’s.

So Disappointed
I did not enjoy the narrator, who unfortunately just did not do this story justice. I don't wish to be mean, but simply to explain what bothered me, the male characters sounded like teenage boys trying too hard to be cool and the female character sounded expressionless and somewhat robotic. The inflection of her dialogue almost never changed. Excited - same, not excited - same, teeth chattering from cold - same, angry - same. That might be why I just couldn't get into the story. I have loved all of the other stories in the series, but this one didn't pull me in the way the others did. Cris Dukehart, or Rob Jacobsen, who co-narrated Warping Minds and Other Misdemeanors, would have been a better choice.

Epic Modern Fantasy
this is a romance, an adventure, and really good book.
I recommend it wholeheartedly.
the guild codex series is great but I could easily see someone picking this up and getting into it without the backstory.
the only criticism I have is for the performance of the narrator. the protagonists are 20 something modern guys from downtown Vancouver. but they sound like grizzled war veterans or something. I still enjoyed it, but kind of odd. mostly noticable with Aaron and Ezra.

This Could Easily Be a Spinoff Series!
So, we finally know how Kai and Izzah met! I was wondering where she came from. She just sort of showed up in the main series with no real explanation. Now We know why! This book was great. And way too short, lol. I wanted more. I totally enjoyed this book. It explains a lot and leaves you wanting to hear more about Kai and Izzah’s story. I know they’re not together anymore, but this book makes it feel like there will be much more to come with these two.
As for the the narrator, I really don’t understand the complaints. He was great! He enunciated well, he showed the necessary emotions. He didn’t make it feel like he was just reading a book. I loved his portrayal of Kai. Kai was always the strong silent type. He has never been a wordy person. It was always clear that his thoughts, feelings and emotions were kept bottled up inside and this book was no different. Kai was raised differently. He’s not going to just suddenly spew enthusiasm and emotion all over the place just because he got his own book. I feel like the narrator gave true justice to Kai’s unique, quiet, thought-driven, unemotional personality. If he had made Kai any different, say, more out-going, or more enthusiastic sounding, it would have felt wrong. This narrator was spot on. He understands Kai and that’s what we want in a narrator, right?!

Amazing Narrator, Amazing Prequel
This novel serves as an amazing prequel to the Spellbound Series. Read it after Talismans

Very Loosely Connected to the Series
The story, action and elements of this novella are fun. However, the connection to the rest of the series is pretty weak. The characters which show up in later books are really just interchangeable with similar character in any action fantasy book. I wondered at the end what became of the "damsel" in subsequent storylines. She was interesting enough, but pretty much unconnected to the overarching series plotline.

Intriguing Story
Relatable characters, good world-building, and an intriguing storyline. This book took me a while to get into. I think this was due to the female characters voice. The narrator is male and didn't pull off the female voice that well. Other eise it was a cute story.

Entertaining, but Out of Character
While it was nice to get into Kai's POV, there were a lot of things that didn't feel like things Kai would do...for example, not alerting his guild to what was happening. The stakes didn't feel very high.
