I can't believe it's over!!! 😭 But what a finish!

Gary Furlong knocked the narration out of the park on this one, bringing the last of Hailey's Soulbound books to life in loving and vivid detail. His narration sucked me in and kept me enthralled for the entire 12 plus hours of story.

Sad it's over but thoroughly loved the ride.

Amazing conclusion

I love this series so much! I adore the characters and the world. I’m beyond sad to see the end of a series I love but it was such an amazing ending. There was action, heart breaking moments, g-ds to deal with, and of course Jono and Patrick. I love the interactions between Jono and Patrick so much. I couldn’t stop listening I needed to know how things would end for all the characters I loved and the ending made me really happy. I love this author so much and the narrator does an amazing job as always. Definitely going to be a series I relisten to!

Great story. Great narration.

Since this is the last book of the series, this is a bit of a review for the whole series.

The narration was amazing. I liked reading the first book of the series, but the narration added an extra bit of flavor to the story. I now search for books narrated by Gary Furlong.

Hailey Turner did an amazing job of keeping track of and managing a large cast of characters and a complex story. Epic fantasy series are often derailed by too many superfluous details and out of character moments. Turner did not fall into that trap. This series was well thought out.

I enjoyed getting to know Jono, Patrick, Sage, and everyone else. The characters care so well built that they feel like friends and neighbors. I would have liked a few more personal insights into their thought process, but that might have derailed the flow of the story considering how large the cast was.

Overall, the rhythm of the storytelling was good which allowed for an excellent narration. The use of never in awkward places bothered me sometimes. This might be a quirk in regional dialects, but I kept envisioning a fight scene where Jono never let go of Patrick.

Emotions were evoked in this series and especially this book. I did shed a few tears in this story. Patrick's self-sacrificing nature was challenging to deal with emotionally. Also, anyone who has been responsible for the care or protection of a sibling will understand why Patrick had such a difficult time with his mission to pay his soul debt.

I will definitely listen to this entire series again. The end was satisfying. In the tradition of myths, Greek and otherwise, Patrick's story was told, but that doesn't mean the story won't evolve with time....

I tend to hold epic fantasy stories to high standards. This series showed me that Hailey Turner has a talent for constructing an engaging, epic story in a timely fashion. I look forward to the next series.

An epic conclusion to an epic journey

Story: 4.5⭐️
Audio: 4.5⭐️

“A Veiled and Hallowed Eve” begins with its fingers wrapped around your neck and pretty much only lets up long enough for a small breath to brace for the next hit. While the first few hours are relatively calm, there are enough emotional hits to keep you aware of the deep, emotional core and cost of the war Patrick has been fighting in one way or another for two decades.

The culmination of Ethan’s godly ambitions means that his machinations and set up for his final push to godhood are well-calculated, brutal and keep Patrick and Jono on their feet for almost the entire ~13hr ride. The Norns may have been sleeping on the job and keeping Merrick and Patrick in the dark, but apparently whatever fates Ethan has access to can see plenty since the last book and this one have him ambushing Patrick, Jono and their pack with agonizing success.

I don’t know if: the Norns only focus on Patrick; if Ethan has so many different fates from different mythologies someone always sees something; Ethan’s fates have learned it’s a tactical advantage to focus on the pack instead of Patrick; and/or the Norns have seen that allowing the ambushes and letting Patrick walk in blind (like in the Hamptons) is the best chance of success, but Ethan and crew always run the chest board. However, I’m happy to say I finally got to agree with Patrick about a plan Jono, Gerrard and everyone else thinks is terrible—all his options really are terrible and his choice has actual tactical reasoning to go along with the emotion.

“Eve” is a very battle-heavy story as more than half of it is fighting, but Turner has a gift for crafting and pulling off these grand scale yet realistic war set pieces that are bursting with characters, actions and tension without them feeling overwhelming in a bad way. Personally, I feel like a bit could have been trimmed here or there but none of it felt unnecessary. I was also pleasantly surprised by how easy Turner is on the reader; this last book could have been much more emotionally draining (looking at you Metahuman Files) but for all the heart-wrenching emotions and gut-punches, there are so many others sprinkled within the chaos and blood-soaked battlefields that are hopeful and cathartic.

These emotional moments (great and small) are handled with so much nuanced mastery by Gary Furlong that even the most stone-hearted listener would be hard-pressed to not be moved. On the battlefield or off, from gut-wrenching yells to quietly choked breaths, Furlong makes sure Turner’s already impactful words leave a crater in your heart.

Patrick may have never wanted to be the hero in this bloody myth of godly creation and destruction, but he carries his mantle of votive with so much heart, dark human, hidden vulnerability and humanity I can’t imagine walking this journey with any other character or hearing his story told in any other narrator’s voice.

HOLLY MOLLEY BATMAN

non stop action, wrenching loss, gods galore, and the all encompassing happy ever after ending makes the bitter sweet knowledge that this is the last book for Patrick, Jono, and their pack just a little bit easier to except. now gotta listen to Hailey's other books. Can't wait for the new hinted new series!!
