Unfortunately, Cal has only put together the most bare-bones of systems. He's no stranger to solving near impossible problems; how difficult could it be to smooth out the slew of angry Mages with bitter rivalries, uncountable hidden secrets, a complete inability to cultivate, and a Dungeon creating messes at full speed? Story
Abandoned at birth and raised to be an assassin by the mysterious Diyu Brotherhood, Danzen has had enough of the life of a contract killer. But escaping his past is as impossible as running from his inner demons....In the remote and mystical Suja Valley, the farthest corner of the known world, it’s only a matter of time before trouble comes hunting him...or he spills a drop of his own blood.
Publisher's Summary
A town put to the sword. The young forcibly recruited. An old man out for revenge.
After his town is put to the sword and the children are taken to replace the fallen, an old man is out for revenge. He’s ready to fail at the most difficult challenge in the world: cultivation.
Too corrupted to even take the first steps, the sly old elder simply agreed with those who told him that it was impossible. Then, he quietly ignored them, rubbed his hands together, and started anyway. He had always failed in what he did: He lost his way from the academy, his command was devastated by a mage, he lost his town, and now his last hopes for the future had been stolen by a group of raiders. The only thing that had never failed him was his sharp mind and philosophy. He would cultivate...no matter what it cost him.
A lifetime of failure can dull and dampen a soul. A reason to live, a goal, can change that in an instant. It is always darkest just before the dawn.

Disappointed
I’m quite surprised this book has such a high rating. I have loved every one of Dakota’s books. But, this book is 9–10 hours of how one man learns to cultivate and maybe 2 hours of interesting content. It got a bit more interesting right at the end. I’m not sure if I’ll be listening to the sequel. I hope this is just a small blip in a library of great books.

No it isn't 5 stars....
First, it is really well written and worth reading. Go ahead and get this book. Second, o god the stupid filler of over written nobody cares is real... you can skip several chapters as they are just poetic descriptions of nobody cares, use one work not 10 min chapters to describe things. You can tell that Dakota Krout didn't write this. You can tell that this is to romanticized. Tired of writers who just fluff like a high school student who needs more words per page so they just use stupid long saying for saying thing for "he died" but NO "he felt the pain and that pain was amazing like the sun scorching the earth!!! It was so immense as the crushing gravity of a dark hole!!!!!" or you can just say he died... really annoying. If you think this was 5 stars then you just like to hear words that sound flowery. sorry but it was just way to overdone.

Reads like fan fiction
I'm hesitant to trash someone's hard work and effort, but frankly this book shouldn't have been released as it is. I repeatedly found myself frustrated with, excruciatingly slow pacing, non-sequitur dialogue, anime style angst and overreaction in the characters, cringey descriptions, and a lot of build up that doesn't deliver. For example, it's nearly 7 hours into the book before the character gets a handle on their cultivation and growth. And up to that point, there is really only a single major event in the book. One might think that this would provide an opportunity for fantastic character development, but everyone remains very two dimensional. The book explores an interesting conundrum when it comes to dealing with corruption and multiple channels, but fails to help the reader and main character appreciate the progress. The bones of a good story are here, but it really needs some significant editing and rewrites. I have about an hour left in the book and I am at the height of what I think is the climax of the story and frankly, I'm so disappointed that I probably won't finish it. I loved The Divine Dungeon series. This story pales in comparison.

Honestly, I'm blown away.
I didn't know what to expect from this one. I'm a fan of Dakota Krout and his Divine Dungeon universe, but I hadn't heard of this Vanderkerken fellow. Still, I liked the main character when he was in the other books, so I gave it a shot. I can't express how much I enjoyed this audiobook. I knew this was going to be a good one by the end of the second chapter, but even then I didn't expect this level of entertainment. Never have I known a more likeable protagonist than Artorian. He's basically the favorite grandfather that you never knew you had. If I had to choose whether to save him or Baby Yoda, I would probably cry because I would expect that Artorian would want me to pick Baby Yoda. But I would be wrong, because Artorian doesn't want me to choose a specific option. He wants me to make the choice that I want to make, and if I'm happy, then he's happy. And while that wouldn't help me make the call, it would bolster my self-confidence in most other situations. I can't wait to continue Artorian's adventures in the next book. This was truly a great experience, and I feel better than I would after reading some self-help book about unleashing your potential through meditation and business savvy. So don't waste your credit on some egomaniac's buzz word monologue; buy this book! Oh, and the narrator was good, too.

Artorian is back and nothing is going to stop him
What makes Artorian such a great character is his uncanny ability to frustrate so many others while still working for their own betterment. This quality is further refined and enhanced in this book. It is a great listen and highly engaging to have an MC that makes mistakes intelligently. That is, the mistakes are made in the pursuit of a better way of doing things, not the typical,"Any idiot would have seen that was a bad idea" mistakes that pervade the genre. This one is well worth your time.

Extremely slow to start but worth it.
This book was very slow getting started. I almost stopped listening to it. But the reviews said it was awesome so I drudged through...and they were right. Things eventually started happening and from that point on it was a good time. The guy reading this does a very good job. I'll read the next in the series.

Fair warning, almost impossible to put down
I was already familiar with the authors previous works, but I feel as if he has outdone himself in this collaboration. It has wit, feelings and a darn engaging story. If I have a complain it would just be that it feels far to short and the wait for the next book in the series is going to be tough.

a lot of build up
The story spent a lot of time building up the main character which was fun to read. I think this book was a setup for a second book for sure. I can't wait for future books to see how his past will affect his present. and you'll understand what I mean when you read the book. The narrator did a good job I didn't notice any background noise or mispronunciations. If I was raider I would be afraid of the old man in this story. I kept thinking of evil Superman during one particular scene. and I quote" I only have two questions " so you know which scene I'm talking about when you get to it in the story. This story only got a four star for me simply because there was almost nothing to do with a dungeon in this particular book. And I say almost. Now the four-star review is subject to change to a five-star for you viscount storyteller as soon as I see more writing involving dungeons. and again it was a good build up to it.

the choices one can live with
the heartwarming tale of an aged man who has determined to find joy in the community of people around him. With witty banter, an indomitable will, and a remarkably disciplined mind (and a little good fortune) our hero determines to provide his grandchildren a chance to choose their own identity. The gentle wisdom, calm wit, and absolute determination, inspired and warmed me, as I enjoyed this book. i hope it can provide as much satisfaction when you read it.
